  • Richard, I noticed that you got to Great Lakes in November of 1958, the same month I arrived there!  I was in Class 496 and started on November 4th. How about you?

  • Thanks Richard.

  • Yes I was on the US Hector in 77thru 80.
  • Good morning Richard

I spent 4 years on the 106, we did 3 WESPAC tours.

I suspect you live on the East coast, I'm originally from Philly, live in Kent WA. just South of Seattle.

We have a reunion coming up in March. I can send you details if you .like.

We have shipmates attend that were on board from Korea to the late '70's.

  • Richard,my ship had to set the SEA & ANCHOR DETAIL many times to get fuel & other supplies from AOs out there in the Pacific in '57,'58,'59...The only names of the AOs I remember is the USS ASHTABULA,and I don't recall her bow numbers, but we met up with a bunch of them, cause my skipper would run almost out of gas every once in a while,You might have been aboard & supplied my old tin can,who knows?

  • I rarely go on line and today I happened to view your comment and I am very appreciative of your condolences.  During Vietnam, I was one of the "Spooks" on the Okie City and other vessels in the East China Sea.

  • I never went that far south except when we crossed the equator in'59 to go to Australia...But it was so bad one winter in '61 in Norfolk at the D & S Piers our 4" mooring lined were swelled up to about 6" or more with frozen ice.Glad I survived it...The quarterdeck watches where the wind blew thru the quarterdeck area were bad enough for me.I always thought it would have been much better if the OOD would have allowed everyone on watch to have a little something to sip on,but that didn't happen neither.

  • Yep!There definitely was a GM involved with hooking up to the iceberg, cause I used to be the GM that fired the SHOT LINE to connect to other ships for hi-line transfer ops,but I still think it was an awesome thing to do,especially the beer party segment!

  • That was quite a feat for the BMs to tie up to an iceberg, especially to have a beer party!!...Sound like there might have been a few GMs in that crowd as well,

  • I was in Da Nang in 1966 and 1969. Was a crew chief in the Camp Tien Sha Fire Department from June 1966 till June 1968. Left a short time after the airforce lost a fire crew and truck in the tet offensive.
