the southwind and northwind and statan island were coast guard the navy did not turn over tyhe burton island till the 70 not sure have to look it up
that was us that got stuck if you look at the picture it was agb-1 that blasted to get free that was either 63 or 64
I remember the NorthWind, Southwind, Staten Island and Burton Island but I remember them as Coast Guard not Navy. I remember One of the Icebreakers came in to fill up our fuel tanks and Ice had not broke up enough and it got stuck and couldn't break the enough ice to get close. At that time about 30-40 guys from the ship was in our camp having a few drinks and they all got called back to the ship to help pull hose. Needless to say they were not happy and I assure the XO was PISSED. I rode one of them, cant remember which one back to McMurdo when we closed Hallet for the winter.
