thanks for the nj website richard. i enjoy your comments. i was a qm on the uss stein de 1065. i took part in operation endsweep 1973.
I have the most respect for swabbies who sailed on ice breakers, and like another sailor who replied to one of your posts,I would not want to be a BM on board one of those things! I worked in Ordnance& Gunnery on tin can surface ships lobbing depth charges down at the bad guys and sending Mk.15 torpedoes at 'em as well.,finally firing 3" .50 Cal twin AA rounds up at the other bad guys trying to set up for a strafing run at us......NOW,back to that LUCKY LAGER I saw on your time line....Ha! Ha! I lived in Long Beach,Cal for a short time& after serious conferences with my first cousin, who lived there at the time.....It is confirmed that we both enjoyed that particular brew back in '63 !
Well Richard, good for you....You made it thru 20 years, and survived to find a nice place to retire....I find myself chewing on hind sight sometimes & asking myself why I didn't stay in for 20.The Capt. recommended me for e5 if I would ship over, but I decided to part ways with the lonely weeks at sea...btw...I was looking at your photos you posted on your time line, and noticed a bottle of LUCKY LAGER beer, and for the life of me I cannot remember where I once enjoyed my share of that wonderful stuff...If you don't mind, how about refreshing my memory on where you got that exciting elixor....I remember Asahi,Nippon Ginko,San Miguel,Sun Tory, and lots of OTHER good past times, but for some reason that one eludes me, Ha!
I really don't know how I have remembered all the info about Glakes thru all these years, maybe it's because something inside my brain forced me to remember it all so that I wouldn't do it again,Ha! Ha!...Welll,whatever the reason,I sure wouldn't do THAT again...Tell me,where did you go after Boot Camp?Did you stay in for 20,or run for the hills as soon as you could?
Hi Richard,
Icebreaker duty is certainly different. What was your rating? I wouldn't want to be a Bosun's Mate on an icebreaker out in that cold! What'd you do in Danang? Some of the guys I served with went to Vietnam for duty on PBRs. One was awarded the Navy Cross and another was seriously wounded, but survived. He just died about two years ago where he retired to near Charleston, SC.
I'm originally from New York and moved to East Brunswick in '73. Now I live in northwest New Jersey in the hills near Hackettstown.
Regards,
Joe Beetar
Thanks for the info, Richard. My husband & I are living in Monroe Township now but I am originally from Clifton. My husband is a retired Navy CPO & he's originally from West Keansburg. Funny how two people from the same state who never knew each other & had been shipped all over the world, would eventually be stationed together and marry.
Glad to meet you Richard. I was on the Falls 1983 to 1985. Just missed you, shipmate.
Well Richard I was at the Naval Support Activity Danang '68-69.My job was security intelligence. My last duty station was Corpus Christi '87-90. I retired there and stayed here since retirement.
What years did you serve aboard the Barnstable County?
Yeah, that's not good. How can we meet that will be more convenient to you.
I have a car, can go where you want, close to you. I was just trying to make it convenient to me for my VA appointment.Right now, my week next week is pretty much wide open (subject to last minute assignments) except for the 27 1pm Dr. appt at VA and another at 9am at VA Martinez.
