Yes, the Mare Island VA clinic has a small canteen inside.
Go in the main / front doors at the Walnut St. entrance. Go back and left past the lab area to the pharmacy. The canteen in on your right across from the pharmacy.
I gave you my home phone before. My cell is 707-495-4771 and I'll have it with me.
See you then.
Richard,
I looked at my calendar wrong. I have work to complete this week. My appointment is for next week, the 27th. How does that day work for you? If so, how about meeting at the VA canteen about 11:30-12?

I work from home, kinda busy first couple days of this week. Next week, 21st I'm going to the Mare Island VA clinic for a 1pm appt. How about before or after that?
Thanks for the "HI" Richard. Took me a while to get back. We'll have to try and meet for a cup of coffee soon.
Richard, It is on the Legacy.com site on the Navy Memorial page. You can list it by today only or many other ways. Here is the link to the page

I am not sure how they get their info, because Chief Karr is not listed but should be!
OK. After a good look, I found almost three hundred people who were a member of that crew at one time or another, you can get street signsm post cards and all kinds of memorabilia, and though the ship was decommed, it is alive and well working for another country right now. I did not find a separate web site for the ship, but there are a lot of things on Military.com and VetFriends.com LOTS of pictures!
Hope I helped you out a bit.
Richard, check out this site for the BC, http://lst1197.hikertechnologies.com/
She was sold to Spain and then decomm'd by them in 09. On Google maps she is still sitting at the pier in Rota, Spain.
Let me dig around a bit for you. I'll get back to you.
USS Barnstable County is mentioned by several people on here. You can find them by going to the "commands" section, scrolling down to the "view all", then enter the name "USS Barnstable County" in the "search" box. There are several entrys and they are from different people, so you may find a shipmate or two.
Richard,
Mattaponi was a converted tanker, single screw. Unfortunately, once during early morning refueling, carrier to port, DD to starboard, officers and crew lost their bearings and we collided. I was navigating at the time.
