  • There were two or three bars on that block, Westerner being the largest, if I recall correctly. Do not remember a white horse. I remember the Westerner was the Westpac widow hang out.

  • San Diego went thru a beautification phase in an effort to transition from a sailor city to a tourist destination. I remember those places closing one by one - the bars and pawn shops. I remember when they took down the Westerner in Chula Vista.

  • Was there when the USS Barbel (SS580) was in dry dock. Reported to Barbel in Dec. 75. Left Mare Island in Oct. '76.

  • Richard I was on Bristol County (LST-1198) I don't remember anyone from the 1197 even though she was still in San Diego when I reported to the Pre com of B C

  • Richard: Although I've been here for 32 years my heart is still back in Brooklyn. Lived not far from the old Brooklyn Navy Yard. Even did a little Tin Can Duty there when I got out. Reserves were not the same for me.  Didn't last long. Know a few people in Glen  Ridge, mostly attorneys that I have worked for. Regards.

  • Richard: Nice to hook up. Put the Intrepid back in commission in '54. Past President of Intrepid Former Crew Members. Don't get over there much anymore. Glad she's still with us. Spent the time in #4 fire room. She couldn't gp anywher with out us.

  • I was stationed on the Bainbridge when it was here for overhaul in 77. We left in 78 to go home to San Diego. Fast-forward to 1983, and I was out of the Navy, and back here working for the Navy Yard,

  • Thanks for the welcome.  I was in the Vallejo area during a couple periods back in the 70's.  NUCPOW and USS FLASHER for part of her overhaul.  Also at MINSY Code 330 (SHIPS SUP) for a short period before transferring out of area back to PEARL.  Hoping to visit the area this summer.

  • McMurdo from Nov. 1973 to Oct 1974
