  • Hello John,
Thanks for the invitation. I spent a short time in GTMO, Iprobably for some air exercises. Unfortunately It was so long ago that I can't remember much detail to talk about. Although I do remember that someone once warned me to shake out my boots before I put them on because there may be a scorpian hidden within. I also remember getting reacquainted with an old roommate from A school who was stationed there. I wish I can remember his name.
  • Hay John, I spent most of my type on Tin Cans, got to GTMO for training a couple of times. Being a PN at sea had its perks. Never stood a watch and was duty Yeoman every four days which required me typing the POD, watching the movie and hitting my rack.
  • John,
Thanks for the invite. October is far away. Let you know later.
Nice spring so far up here on the hill top. Tom
  • I have not been over here in a long time. (SORRY) My home is in Washington, PA. Doug was kind enough to let me join Navy Vets when he first started this group since I lived on a Navy base in Newport, RI. (a spouse) He has really shined this place up. I will have to go have a look around. You have a great day John......Welcome Aboard! I will have to come here more often now that it is really filling up with members!
  • John,
It doesn't look as though I'll be joing you in Branson. We have a lot going on this year and it is a little pricey when you add in air fare. But if it wasn't for other commitments, I'd try to make it. Thanks for the info on Navy Vets.

  • I am not sure but I think it was near the street to the movies and the pool was right out our back door, I just can't dig that info out of my memory bank right now.I am the adjutant at our post, and also am a volunteer driver for the VA hospital in Fort Snelling. Our post is quite small and holdijg it's own.
  • John thanks for the info to join this Web site, it is great. Not only were we close in boot camp I was in GITMO from Jan. 1960 to Jun 1961. I was stationed at the Boat Shed, lived on Bay Hill, drank at the barrel club, was on a bowling team, played golf, had a basketball team, for NEGDEF I was the Mike boat engineer and rode the stern with an M1 rifle. Don't forget the outdoor movies and the USO show with Bob Hope we were dubbed Cape Canaverals ash tray. Fond memories I loved GITMO. Maybe we should start a NEGDEF or Bay of Pigs group. Damn we were lucky that invasion did not go as planned we would have been over run in short order. By the way did you get the Naval Expeditionary Medal for that, we rate it and not every one got it. I have committed myself to AE Association reunion in ST. Louis this year so won't make the Gitmo one. I do want to make one though. Ambrose Farmer and Garland Summerall are members and were at the Boat Shed with me are both members too. William Gazer is also a shipmate of mine from another command who is a member. I will send my info in a join here soon.
  • It's good to hear from you again John. I was there in PA for 4 years and I loved every minute of it. I moved from there in 81 and got stationed at NAS So. Weymouth MA and did another 6 years there, but I missed PA the whole time. I've always wished that I could have stayed in PA. The one person i can remember from uour squadron is Joe Hively. A very colorful character he was and a good guy. I have to tweek my memory mroe to see if i can remember some names. I spent all of my time at Willy's Grave in AIMD at the south end of the base. Across the street from Base Personell.
    Good to hear from you.
    Dan
