It would be great if you and I got to meet and talk about our time in GITMO. I don't know if you have checked our website, but it might be difficult to get hotel reservations for the reunion. We already have somewhere around 80 people registered, and many of them were in GITMO at the same time as you and me. Give it a try and hopefully you can get a room reservation and send in your paperwork to Mike Warman. Once again, our website is www.gitmobay.org.
It sounds like we were in ECHO COMPANY together. I was a gunner on a light 30 machine gun crew. We may have been assigned to your platoon, sometimes. I only put 4 years in the regular Navy, but after I got married and had 3 kids, I joined the USNR and put 8 more years in with VP64 out of Willow Grove, PA. After doing well in my company, and moving to CT, I dropped out of thhe USNR. In a way, I regret not putting 20 total years in, but have had a good life with my wife (51 yrs), 3 children and 12 grandkids.
I was on the first floor of the same barracks. I don't know which direction was East and which was West. However, if you approached the back of the barracks from the swimming pool, I lived on your right side.
Charleston, SC is only a hop-skip & jump from Knoxville, TN, so you should join us in October. Get the details at www.gitmobay.org.
Robert, you are eligible for the VFW because of your time in GITMO. Why don't you join us at our GITMO reunion this October, in Charleston, SC.
Welcome aboard shipmate, May you have Fair Winds and Following Seas!
Thank you for your service.
