Naval Station Rota is a Spanish naval base commanded by a Spanish Vice Admiral near the Spanish town of El Puerto de Santa María, NavSta Rota is the largest American military community in Spain and houses US Navy Sailors, Marines, and their families.

I was stationed in Rota in 1969 and 1970. I worked at NAVCOMSTA and also flew with VQ2 in EC121M's and EA3B's. I also flew off four aircraft carriers while stationed in Rota; Roosevelt, Forrestal, Saratoga and Kennedy, all of which are now scrap metal. My wife was a Spanish national working at the base hospital as a medical transcriptionist. We have been married for 47 years and try to go to Spain every year to visit family. Like Roger Enright wrote, we planned to retire there but circumstances made it difficult when the time came. I was so fortunate to be stationed in Rota.

I saw a lot of VP Squadrons both in Rota and AT NAF Naha Okinawa
I was in the regular Navy from 1958-62, and USNR from 1970-78. If Roger C. Enright was there 1975-78, he was there when VP64 arrived each summer. Back then there were only 4 combat ready patrol squadrons on the East Coast. Each of us relieved the regular Navy squadron in Rota for one month every summer. That way the regular Navy VP squadron could return to the U.S. for 4 months each year. We enjoyed Rota.
I was stationed at Naval Station Rota from 1975 to 1978. Worked in Supply Department. Was assigned to The T Shed for Simon Lake for several months and spent more than a year working HHG as Claims investigator and Military Customs Inspector. My 6 years in Spain first aboard the USS Simon Lake then at Naval Station was a great time in my life. So many friends mostly off base. Puerto Santa Maria was my base of operations and It was a very long party and experiencing lots of Spanish Culture. I am in the process of moving to Spain on a full time basis. 40 years has seen a lot of changes but I still love Spain.
I was stationed at NS Rota from 1977 to 1979. Air Traffic Control. It was one of the best times of my life! I too hung out in a lot of the local bars. Benny's Bar, the April down at Playa De La Luz, Kelly's Bar just outside the gate. I drove a chartreuse green volkswagon convertible that I brought with me from NAS Kingsville. My peeps were Chris Wright VQ2 -A3's (who I married), Phil Spencer VQ-2 (P3's), Chuck Young VQ-2, Donna Huoppi (Comsta), Michelle Ruark VQ-2, Lynn Flemming (RM3 - comsta), (who married Joe Aloia from the USS Canopus). If any of you knew Chris Wright he passed away in 2012. The rest of us are still alive and kicking and in touch with each other. Loved eating at the golf club and the EM club. Got to know andalusia very well in my trusty VW!! Even got married in Gibraltar!
I was stationed at Naval Hospital Rota from 2012-2014 as my final duty station before the end of my enlistment. I left just before the base added four destroyers for permanent assignment. I was able to travel to Germany, Italy, UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, and France. It was a great duty station simply for the travel opportunities.
I was stationed in Rota from November of 1969 thru November of 1974. Main hang out was Benny's Bar & Grill. It was a wonderful duty station and meeting many third national women was a real education. I was an AK1 and attached to the Supply Response Section in the VQ-2 hangar.
I was station with NSD from 1964 rill 1966 was a happy storekeeper but had a bad moment and changed my rating.
