  • I found it amazing that the civilian foundries gon't use silica sand any more. Now the ones I've talked to are using olivine with Petro Bond binders.
  • How about that CO2 and PUNB sand? that was some hard stuff to break up and no re-using it either
  • roxanne, go down to page 19 of this section and yo9u will see the last photo of shop 81-A on the puget sound.
    Norman johnson put it in.
  • gleason, do you know the foundry picture on the web page is 81a, sound? i can't make out who the people are, not sure who put it there and what the year was. rox
  • Some of you mention using bug juice on the pouring deck. We used Petrobond sand on the Frontier and it kept the deck rust free. It also was dust free so the foundry always was easy to keep clean. I remember some Captain giving a tour of the ship telling the group we didnt do much work as the reason it was clean. Bull, I wish he could have visited when we did an Iron or Steel heat. Sometimes 40 mold waiting to be poured.
  • LOL Foxy Roxy I rember that one lol
  • i remeber once on the sound, we were pouring several rows and my job was degassing and skimming. i thought cooling off the degassing rod by holding under cold water was a good idea. boy was that buck tooth, coke bottle wearing glasses LPO mad. i was new and it sounded like popcorn microwaving when i went to degass the second heat.
  • steven, did you get my request for those pictures? and that we will be going thru frisco next year for our 20th
  • i remember the nick name but don't think i was there. was it ricky, cuz for k guy who married that hooker? i don't think i ever saw dozier work. all he did was read the newspaper and gripe about getting underway. do you remember the turltles we bought in france. we had to bury them at sea and hide em during zone inspections. i miss the beaches.
  • Hey Rox

I don't know if you were in the foundry on the Yellowstone when this happend. Do you remember during a steel pour, Jeff Dozier was skimming and yelled out to a bunch of the boot camps that were watching us, "someone get me some f*** ing slax " and then one of them walked up to him in the middle of the pour and tried to hand him some pants from a fire suit? I was pouring that heat and I almost fell over laughing. I think I might have even pissed myself. What was that guys name, I remember calling him Slax for a long time after that.

Posablly seeing about starting up a navy molders museum?

I know they dismissed our rate back in 1997. I would hope there are enough of us left to possably  get together and see about creating a museum somewhere  here in the states to preserve our long history and heritage that we all have shared as Molders. Any of you out there please give me a response if you read this Discussion.                                      Thanks.
