"Hi Don,
I loved my days on the Frontier. I did 3 cruises to Hawaii. By the time I got aboard she was considered too old to go all the way to Westpac. The ship won the E award 3 times so they decided to put her in mothballs. That was a sad day. …"
"Glad to hear you are getting it under control. I have type 2 myself all though I keep it under control with half a pill a day and no sugar. The trouble is almost everything has sugar in it. I need to watch the fat and cholesterol too. If it has…"
"Hey Wendell! How you doing? I took a look at the pic of you on the Hector and of course I remember you. You are the first guy I found on here that I served with."
"Welcome to the page Phil. I started this page quite awhile ago but you and I are the only ones so far. I joined the Frontier Association but haven't been to a reunion yet."
"I just reconnected with a molder from 1967-1969. I recently found ML2 Jim Culver. He was on the USS Frontier with me and then went to the USS Bryce Canyon. I tried to get him to join the group. Anyone else who knew him, I will pass along the…"
"Hi Jim,
I was in A school in 1965 finishing up around August. I think it was called class 2-65, being the second class to complete in 1965. The instructors were ML1 Saylor, ML1 Monaghan and MLC Pellatier. They were all great guys"
"Did you ever come across an ML2 Jim Culver? He was on the Bryce Canyon Starting about July of 68. He was from Catoosa and might live in Shawnee right now. I was his best man back in 68 before going to the Bryce Canyon. We were both on the Frontier…"
"Some of you mention using bug juice on the pouring deck. We used Petrobond sand on the Frontier and it kept the deck rust free. It also was dust free so the foundry always was easy to keep clean. I remember some Captain giving a tour of the ship…"
"It is amazing how few of us there are here. ML A school graduated abour 3 classes a year. My class was only 7 guys but I think there were on the average at least 10. When was the last class? I would guess at least 10 years ago. In the last 50 years…"
"Dave, you didn't touch the electrodes did you? If so you were lucky. I thought that would kill you, hence I was real careful not to touch it. I used that same furnace in A school. It was on the right side of the foundry. Did they still have the Ajax…"
Hello Roland, These people were gone by the time I got there except for MLC Pete Monaghan and he left shortly after I checked in. He and I did get to install a few TV antennas on some apartment buildings. The instructors there in late 68 were MLCM Robert Quick, MLCM Art Devonshire, ML1 Donald Heimbaugh and ML2 Langston. Your picture of the oil fired furnace looked like the one that was on the Everglades. They also had an LFC which was seldom used.
I will post a gawd awful image of me when I can find it and get some one to show me how to attach it , I did try the chat line a sec ago , Roland I was suppose to go on the Isle Royal in 70 when it was getting ready for wespac
Hey Roland ,Bo was some character ,I picked up a guy in Herford,Tex. in 79-80 who was a dead ringer for ole Bo even sounded like him , the Bryce Canyon was the worst ship I was ever stationed on
ROLAND, IF YOU LOOK AT MY PICTURES, THERE IS A PHOTO OF ML A CLASS 7403, MLC EDENS IS IN THE FRONT ROW. ALSO IN THE PICTURE OF MLFN STEVENS, THERE IS A SHOT OF THE ROCKING ARC IN THE FOUNDRY AT GTMO, CUBA. F.Y.I.
JIM
ROLAND, IT COULD HAVE BEEN EDENS, IT HAS BEEN 35 YEARS SINCE I WAS IN "A" SCHOOL, I WAS AN INSTRUCTOR AT ML A AND J SCHOOLS FROM 88 - 92, I WONDER WHAT EVER HAPPEND TO ALL OF THE CLASS PHOTOS THAT HUNG IN THE BACK PASSAGE WAY OF THE SCHOOL AT NTC. WHEN WE MOVED FROM 32ND STREET TO NTC ALL OF THE PHOTOS WERE IN BOXES AND NO ONE WANTED TO HANG THEM UP. ML1 MIKE SUMMY AND I FOUND A BLANK BULKHEAD AND REFRAMED THE PICTURES AND HUNG THEM ALL UP. IT WAS A FOCAL POINT FOR ALL THE STUDENTS. THEY ALL WANTED TO SEE THEIR "A" SCHOOL PICTURE, AND SEE WHAT THEIR CHIEF OR LPO LOOKED LIKE BACK IN THE DAY. THEY ARE EITHER IN THE ARCHIVES OR IN SOMEONES GARAGE......HA
