  • Does anyone know if we are still working on getting the Ranger as a museum ship in OR.? I have not heard anything about this in sometime. I believe I remember reading that it had been put on hold and the online ship store was closed. Could someone clarify this for me.

    Thanks,

  • Assigned to Ranger 1972. Served with "W" Division. Frequently in and out of Subic Bay.

  • Served on board from 1978 - 1981. Print Shop, LI1.

  • shipboard company, V3 division - 1974 - 1976.....San Fran to San Diego, one west pac ...  1976  ...

  • I put the Ranger in commission and got off in Jan. 59. I took a discharge to get off the ship. The Cap't was an aristocratic type of guy and let the XO run the ship He would promise us early liberty every friday if the zone insp. was ok. Needless to say ,we never got that early liberty. The guy was a real tyrant. I was an ABE3 in V-2 division. One duty night a light was left on in a passageway down on the 2nd deck. I did not know we had a space down there. I was written up and went to XO's Mast. He leaned over the podium and threatened to bust me. This brush with the law convinced me to follow the straight and narrow from then on. I went on to do 20 years in the Navy and retired  as an ETC. Out of all the ships that I served in I can honestly say that the Ranger was the only ship that I hated. The Captains Mast in hanger bay one looked like personnel inspection there were so many sailors.  It was a happy day when I stood on the shore at Treasure Island and watched that ship sail for their first cruise.

  • Hello to all,

I served as a BT on the Ranger from Dec. 1973 to Jun 1977.  I was assigned to P2 Division, 2MMR.  I was the P2 division DCPO in 1976.  I'm looking forward to when the old "Boat" opens as a museum in Portland.

  • I was ships company AIMD 1979-83. Did two long westpacs while aboard.

"Love(?) at first sight!"

Ahoy, Shipmates!I was a scared 18 year old kid, when I was high lined from the USS Aludra (AF-55), to that BIG grey monster that was to be my home for the next two(2) years. 1965-67. I sure grew up, aboard 'Rangerboat'.I was a Illustrator Draftsman (DM), assigned to the Integrated Operational Intelligence Center (IOIC), OP Division.I had many military commands, in my 24 years of military duty. I've met & forgot many men, through those years. BUT! I've never forgot, my "First Ship". It's kinda…
