"Danny, I went to boot in San Diego in May 1972 after graduation from Eunice New Mexico HS (might have played against you in football). Later on to Ranger with "W" Div."
"Hi Dr. Passioneria,
I was on the Ranger 1972-1973, with W-Division. I did not know about the "murders". Is there a link to read what happened there?
"
"I was on "worm island" summer of 1972 with Company 157 for part one of boot. Those regular inspections were done by Chiefs assigned from MED "Military Evaluation Division" at RTC. I still remember one morning before inspection we were lined up on…"
"Richard,
I was assigned to chief's mess first three months on Ranger during WestPac cruise, 1972-73. I remember a phillipino chief (Larry ???) was in commissaryman in charge. Interesting stories about what added to the menu.
"I had the privilege of working at Military Evaluation Division during boot camp for a week or two (they asked for volunteers to keep the inspection records for each company in the contest for the best company). The chief in charge had a problem…"
"I was at RTC May 72 - July 72, Company 157. Went on to BEEP school (San Diego) and later ET"A" school at Treasure Island. Then "W" Division on Ranger CVA-61 for one West Pac cruise. I still remember our CC in boot Quartermaster 1st Class…"
"Hi Wes.
I also was in BEEP during Summer 1972. Was in Boot May - July 1972 at RTC San Diego. Did we go to BEEP together? I remember the instructor was a young man but cannot recall his name. Went to Treasure Island afterwards for ET 'A' school."
Charles it has been a while since i was on this site. I've retired from working for the city of Albuquerque at the end of January 2016. Now I am starting to check on the different sites I have joined in the past. Your question was where was I from in NM, well it was Roswell, and like you I was 17 when I joined on June 15, 1972. Went to boot in San Diego aviation training in Millington TN 8/72. Volunteered for duty with the Marines as a door gunner and shipped to Vietnam 10/72. With SOG unit until 2/74 then on to LPH-10 USS Tripoli till May 0f 75. Did tours at Kirtland AFB 75-79 & 83-85 NAVWEPSEVLVAC, USS Ranger 79-83. Completed 13.5 years then got out.
I was right behind you. I went in June 14, 72 right after I turned 17. Went RM A school in San Diego and then 2.75 yrs in the Phillipines. Didn't make the Ranger until my last 2 yrs.
I"got" to do my mess time ( 4 months or so ) in the Chief's Mess around May '76 - Aug '76 or so...some real good food and fruits...I think we had a Phillipino chief in charge...don't remember his name...I would start my shift at 8pm or so...and get off at 6am or so...did the midnight snacks and a big, nice breakfast .... no more chow lines for me while working there...best duty of my Navy time......
I went to Tennesse for aviation training for a month and then was shipped out to MCRD with 9 other sailors for training with the Marines. We were sent to Nam as door gunners for 16 months. I stayed undesignated airman until I went aboard the Tripoli. I then went into Ground Support (AS).
