  • Looking for Billy Mitchell JO3

  • The Ranger had 4 Mains and 2 Aux's. She had 4 Screws and 2 Rudders. I saw her in dry dock in Yokuska after the ship wreck in April of 1979.

  • Number of screws? I seem to remember the Ranger having 2 screws this was in 72-73 the u-tube tour mentioned 4 screws  and four diesel generators? was she retro fitted?

  • Dealers, loan sharks and murderers...At the end of Vietnam...most of the enlisted crew were court side enlistees every thing short of murder one...a tough crew...we did get the job done...but it was sort of jail house rules...mind your own business...play with the team....or you might go for a midnight swim...pretty much the Navy anyway....some ports were walking on the wild side as well....

  • Playing chicken was pretty common during Vietnam unwraps we would get the fuel and bombs on board about the time an east block vessel would bear down on us. We were living on frozen ballast left over from WWII and what the whales brought in.

  • I was aboard the ranger 72-73 end of the Vietnam war with akron 113

we had general quarters a couple of times our primary battle station was in Haiphong Harbor or within quick strike range to support the blockade I would like to hear from other brown water sailors that served during and in the blockade. I saw a post that asked if anyone remembered a Medic named PAT? ...Petty Officer or chief as I recall known for screaming obscenities if his coffee cup was washed...done every once in a while just for the entertainment...although now I realise that it may have been the beginning of hypertension hope he has done well as I hope all of my shipmates did...

  • My VAQ squadron from NAS Whidbey Is Wa were aboard the USS Ranger right after it had been retrofitted and the Chief's mess moved to another location. the first day out to sea another Squadron CO tried to catapult the F-4 he was flying with the parking brake engaged. the Catapult was able to move the F-4 and over the angel deck it went as the crew ejected. The black tire skid marks on the deck were about 1/4" thick and stuck to the flight deck like cement. This was in 1977 if I remember correctly.

  • I was an RM2 (CT/ET/SW) DCPO PPO for COMMs. I was there at 0455 5 Apr.1979 when we played chicken with that Russian tanker and lost. I was also there when sailors were being murdered. I got out with my life. I loved the ship bu I hated the Dealers, Loan Sharks and Murderers.

"Love(?) at first sight!"

Ahoy, Shipmates!I was a scared 18 year old kid, when I was high lined from the USS Aludra (AF-55), to that BIG grey monster that was to be my home for the next two(2) years. 1965-67. I sure grew up, aboard 'Rangerboat'.I was a Illustrator Draftsman (DM), assigned to the Integrated Operational Intelligence Center (IOIC), OP Division.I had many military commands, in my 24 years of military duty. I've met & forgot many men, through those years. BUT! I've never forgot, my "First Ship". It's kinda…
