Our Captain was a "Jack" Magee. He was a real fire ball. He would offer to have our big, fat ol' REPAIR SHIP aid in any fire missions against the VC if needed. We called him GQ JACK. He was a good skipper.
So you rode the train? It passes right through Wasilla. Then that tunnel through the mountain to get to Whittier. Been all over but not everywhere. Alaska is a big place. I been here 25 years and still haven't been all through it.
Bob, here a couple of panoramics you might enjoy! These are of B3 on the Slater after restoration. B1 is in progress this Winter. You can use your mouse to scan around 360 and up and down!
I don't recall having to ride in cattle cars, but I do remember it was very hot. The Cunyngham was there for shake down cruse following a period in dry dock in Portsmouth, Va. I don’t remember the exact date but I think it was after the second Mediterranean Cruise. The Cunynghan made three trips to the Mediterranean and 3 or 4 to the Caribbean area.
Hope you get passed it all quicker than that! Take care of yourself! By that time you can hopefully join us on a cruise! She heads for dry dock next Winter and the engineers have finished the rebuild on the main generating 8 cyl and are about to begin the work on the mains! I expect they'll have them running in short order! In the mean time if you ever want to visit her decks, let me know! Navy vets are welcome on board at any time. Even while she is closed for the Winter, we are working on her every week! So, get well quick and we'll hold a uniform and command ball cap for ya!
Robert, That gray chat bar is the chat for here in Navyvets! If you click on the two squares in the second little box a screen will pop up and let you know who here is on and allow you to talk to them directly! Nor too many have figured it out or use it that much!
Welcome aboard Petty Officer Friedhaber! If you want to don those utilities again and get your hands dirty, our engineers are just about to start the rebuild of our 16-278's on the Slater in Albany! The goal is to have her "haze gray and underway" once again!

I see you have a picture of a "Capt. Magee" What was his full name? We had a Capt Magee on Hector too. Just want to see if he is the same one.
