  • White Beach was neat it was for some r & r for most of the crew. The Markab was towing the ammo ship Vesuvius in a heavy storm when the Markab lost all power. We was lucky a couple of army tugs from Okinawa came out and towed to port. Of all things to be saved by the army in the ocean ha ha. What took place the R-2 divison officer and a Chief from the engine room had the top watch. There was a lub oil alarm thad woul ring once every now and then, so they turned the alarm off. We lost all lube oil to the ruduction gears and the main spring bearings. We had to fly in some experts and new parts from the states. That took a while the new parts to arrive. Also the foundry and the machine were kept busy day and night repairing all bearings and bushings. The rest of the crew had a great r & r. The R-2 boss and MMC did not get court marshalled they got an accommodation instead. Some of us were at a loss of the out come . later, art
  • Paul, I have two cruise books from the Markab, I will see if I can find some good pictures to upload. They had me in that damm repair office and Big Mac was the lucky one as he was in the foundry. later art
  • Paul, yes I was down at the pm/ml school from feb 68 to sep 71 from there I went to the Jason AR-8. But before that I was aboard the Markab from may 66 to nov 67. Andy was abord then I found my cruise book and found pictures of the guys in the pattern shop and tj foundry. I scan them and send them to you. I think Andy just got transferd to one of the small tenders. It was the start of christmas stand down and Andy came over to the school to visit. We are all in the Instuctor lounge and Andy wants to know if any wants to buy his gun. Nobody took him up omn the offer. So Andy heads up to the bay area for christmas. He gets home and opens open the door and ask his kids where there mom. THey say she is down at her sister house for a party. the house was close by. Andy gets down there and gets into a argument with his wife and her ex husband. Here is the bad part he walks back to his truck and get the gun and shoots his wife and th ex husband and he shoots himself in the ear.The charge Andy with pre-medated murder because he walked back to get his gun. We heard his own mother inlaw wanted to testafy in his behalf but her grown kids talked here out of it. Andy went to prison up there. He sent us a few letters and said prison was a lot like boot camp but no liberty. We heard that Andy passed away with a heart attack. Andy a really a great craftsman with any kind of wood plus he was tough on the volly ball court durning the lunch hour. catch you latter. art, san diego
  • Paul, I had duty with Andy Anderson at the PM&ml School. It was just before christmas standown we were all in the instructor lounge when Andy asked if we wanted to buy his gun. Nobody bought the gun and Andy left for the bay area and that sad tragedy took placed. Any was a great craftsman with wood. I have a lot more info on the tragedy

I'm Bill Karr. My son Doug created this site and I help him out a bit. We hope that you enjoy it.

Your profile states that you are still on actve duty, Paul. You might want to correct that. (No big deal.)

The following message is from Doug:
    1. Be sure to upload an image of yourself. You can add your image on your Footlocker.
    2. Click the Commands tab and search for your commands so that you can join them and add them to your page! This is how other shipmates will find you.
    3. Invite all your shipmates!
    4. Don't hesitate to add an event or a reunion to the Events tab!
    5. We've also started Commands for each State. Be sure to join or add your own state!

I give out gifts often for those folks who participate on Navy Vets! Be sure to start up a blog post or two and tell us all about your time in the Navy!

    Thanks,
    Doug
