  White Beach, and Naha, excellent liberty. When I got transferred off, it was during the big air plane strike and I set at the air base for over ten days, shuffling people in and out from Nam for R & R. They had the best mess hall I ever ate at in the military. Fancy and good. Villiage 3 I believe where I had the most fun when we broke down. Makes sense to accommodate the one responsibile, kind of like politics today. Put morons in charge that haven't got a clue (regardless of party) and let them play games with our money and liberty, for the sake of them getting re-elected. I do remember the GQ about 2-3 in the morning. I always laugh when thinking of this, four 3inch 50 cals., wow was setting ducks, bobbing around in the ocean. When we had left Hong Kong prior to that we rode a big storm to Japan. I was under impression that contributed to the problem.
  You live in Diego now? We get out to southern Cal almost every other year to visit my last Aunt in Riverside and always drive the coast from Diego to San Fran. We love this drive, except around LA. We usually spend several days in Monterey, San Fran area. Love Fishermans Wharf. Always look forward to getting home to our little Iowa farm communities though. Later

  I just noticed that it was in May of 66 you came aboard, and I went off in Aug at White Beach, Okinawa after breaking down. My 66 cruise book has me with the tool room guys and has me listed as a EM3, instead of PM3, plane is obvious on my arm though. Andy skipped out of photos and they didn't take any photos of Pattern Shop. Yea I would like to see some of the pics. Later

  I forgot about the volley ball net between the buildings that we used during breaks and noon. Sometimes these games became very intense between instructors and students. I think it was a way of stricking back

  Thank you Art for the info on Andy. What a shame for all involved, especially the kids. You probably knew Gary Nishikawa and alot of the others in the carpenter shop I knew. The Markab organizers are trying to tie in with a couple of the AR's for a joint reunion, since so many of the guys where on alot of these ships with each other. Later

  Art, You was an instructor at PM/ML school in 68. I went through 13 weeks of ML before getting into promised PM school in 63. Sawtell was my first class po in Ml and another chief. In PM school I remember a first class I believe with the name of Ashton. Sawtell was quite a drinker and Ashton was kind of strict, but both good instructors. I can't remember the Lt in charge of school, I just know he give me a couple of good breaks and if it wasn't for him I never would have made it. Alot of outside distractions at that time. I remember him coming to me once and took me outside and told me if I didn't get my head out of my """"" , he would put it in so far I never would get it out. Put the fear in me. Being from a small town and country boy, big city and freedom was more then I could handle at that time, but they put me on track. Like I have mentioned in other emails, I retire end of Dec after 44 years of Pattern Making in California, Arizonia, Colorado, Kansas and Iowa. Almost all in job shops, building patterns for mining, aircraft, auto, pump industry, etc. Its been a great trade for me. I made the transition from print building to computer over twenty years ago and haven't look back. I miss the old way, the challenge was more and at times I miss it. But time and accuracy factor make it imposible to ever consider thinking it wrong route to go.
  I would like to know more on Andy though. When this happened, whatever happened to him, etc. I talked to RC Thornley recently and he also would like to know. I don't know if you knew of a Bryant, another PatternMaker, he is retired to Texas. He was aboard the Markab with me and Andy. Recently I was at a Markab reunion in Dearborn, Mich., about 90 there and had quite a time with some of the guys when I was aboard. We got to go, Later, Paul Beyer

  Do you ever see MLCM Callaghan and MLCM Quick? There was another MLC that I used to work weekends with putting up TV antennas on apartment buildings. I think his name was Monahan, not sure of the spelling. Of all the foundries in San Diego there is only one that was there in the late 60's and that is National City Foundry. D&M either closed or changed the name.

  That was the cupola in Chinhae Korea. It would hold about 1000LBS of molten iron. They would try to tap out into a small ladle and plug the tapping hole. I got them to tap out into a ladle that would hold all the iron and then pour into smaller ladles that could be handled by one or two people. This was after they lost the plug one day and dumped some iron on the floor. MLC Tomack was there but left before I got there. They were tapping into one ladle but when Tom left they must have went back to their old ways. I have several more pictures, not sure about the D&M will get them out and get them on here.

  Arthur, yes I would like to hear more on what happened. I served with Andy for over three years on the Markab. We was good buddies on ship. I did some projects on the side with him in making furniture. I knew his wife and was shocked on hearing this, even though I never kept in touch with him after getting out of Navy in 1966. R.C. Thornley told me about it earlier this year. He was just as perplexed as I. I would like to know what happened to him. Obviously his career was over in the Navy and he went to prison. But some details would be of interest for us. Thank you.
  By the way was you an instructor at PM"A" school in Diego?
