  • Great pictures Jerry. Posted some of mine whille going thru Canal.

  • I was all over the canal in a private boat and especially in Gatun lake during the 3 years I was stationed at CoCo Solo  (atlantic side).. did a buch of diving and traveled around the ithmus and up to Costa Rica by Motorcycle seeing all the sights.. it was a grand time..  Most of that base now is turned into parking for Containers of the big ships that park on those piers where the old sub pens were located.

  • Tim,you mean "J" street?
  • Went threw her in 1984, one of the best liberty port ever next to Thailand and P.I. I really enjoyed the Blue Goose, and, La Gloria's.
  • Dug the "Ditch"aboard the William H. Standley CG-32
  • I first got to cross the Canal on the USS Holland AS-32 in1974 on the way to the Dry Docks/Bremerton, Wash, for a face lift.
  • Crossed the Panama Canal many times from April 1963 to Aug 1966. We made 4 trips to Panama during this time spending 4-6 months each trip and went back and forth multiple times each trip aboard the USS Churchill County LST-583.
  • I received my Order of the Ditch certificate on20Nov78. By canal it's only fifty miles from ocean to ocean. 7,837 miles to go around South America. My ship mates and I did both. From Charleston,SC we started UNITAS XIX. The best cruise I was ever on.
  • I TRANSITED THE CANAL IN 73 GOING TO NAM ABOARD THE USS LAWERANCE DDG 4, OUT OF NORFOLK .VA. RTURNED TRIP IN 74.

Points of interest in the Canal Zone

Military pictures I was stationed in the canal zone back in 1967>1970 at the COCO SOLO Naval Station (Atlantic side)  which was suport for a Naval Security Group Activity named Galate Island.   There are a bunch of older pictures at the above link .I'll dig out some other links to the mess that place has become in the near future and add them as we go.
