  • Walter I guess your right we were young and had the world by the horns.  I actually got out for 18 months after a 5 year tour on Indy went straight to Edson in Newport.  So fool kept telling me a NRF can was great 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer.  First year we wre underway 265 days. 6&6 wore me out I can remeber 6 weeks straight standing upper level in B-3 eat, stand watch, eat, sleep and do it over again.  Have to check out that book.

  • Have any of you BT'S ever served with a Chief William Sneed?  He served aboard the following ships.U.S.S. Howard D Crow DE-252,U.S.S,.Robert H McCard DD-82, U.S.S.Compton DD-705,U.S.S. Dyess DD-880,U.S.S.Charles H.Roan DD-853,U.S.S. Bennington CVS-20,U.S.S. Jouett CG-29, U.S.S.Barbey FF-1088,U.S.S.Doyle FFG 39. He wrote a book called Black Oil Chief. it's 348 pages,softcover,available on E-BAY & AMAZON.COM. It's pretty interesting.I have a copy.

  • I actually got use to 6 & 6.  The consistant rythmn of life made long underway periods more tolerable.  Why did we do this to ourselves......youthful foolishness.  Hey, like the posters said, "Its not just a job, its an adventure."  I sure learned alot about myself and what I did/did not want to do with my life.

  • 6&6 was a way of life on Edson and if we were lite off inport port and starboard was the best you could expect. Wasn't much better on a carrier either 3 section underway 4 section inport never figured out why we needed a inport cold iron oil king. Port and Starboard inport with the plant on line.  Somewhat better on the FFG-7 only needed 4 watchstanders underway and 2 inport.  Why did we do this to ourselfs?

  • All I remember is standing watch 3 days before getting underway and last to leave.Stood 6 and 6 for a Westpac deployment!!

  • Heck I was crazy enough to go back did 5 years on CV-62 made BT2 got out for 18 months and went back in.  Kept my crow and got a reup bonus.  Made CPO with 11 years in then was force to change rate to EN did a tour on a FFG-7. That was cool start the SSDG's about an hour before sea detail and start the mains when they called sea detail.  No more liting fires a day or 2 before or a week before on the carrier.

sprayer plates

nsfo sucked f-76 was pretty good burning jp-5 you could burn but superheater temps woud be higher and it did burn cleaner but was expensive to burn in a boiler and we made ourown overloads on the coral sea drilled out some 11s and made 9s for full power runs and wartimeuse. Steaming an m-type with no abc"s was a real challenge but it made the watch go by fast.
