  •    During VP-9's 1988 deplyment to the gulf, both sides in the Iran-Iraq war had been mining each other's waters. The mines often broke loose and drifted, creating considerable excitment for ships navigating those waters.

One of our missions was to look for drifting mines during our daily low level patrols of the gulf.

They tended to look like bright while spots on our infared equipment of the time, but at 200 feet and 200 knots, they were hard to spot.

Netherless, spot one I did on IRDS. We managed to relocate it, mark it, then call in a surface unit to deal with it, though because of the haze we couldn't see it clearly.

Turns out it was a bag of garbage.

The UDT-types blew it up anyway.

  • I was on USS Adroit (MSO 509) During Operation Desert Storm...January 1991...We found 38 Water Mines within our deployment...Our mission was to hunt for them using Sonar and have EOD's (Explosive Ordanance Divers) detonate each mine to ensure safe waters all the way up the Persian Gulf to the Kuwaiti Coast...3439408082?profile=original3439408117?profile=original

My Award

I was there when one of the Helo Ships had a boiler explosion. It killed a few guysand they came outoard of us. I think it was the Iwo Jima. We feed their crew and or our crew at the same time. That was where I got my NAM. We hung out at a hotel that had a swimming pool on the top deck with a bar (of course). One our off time we made good use of the hotel. Had a bar down stairs. And wasclose to the Gold Suk.
