  • I was on the Holland in the early 70's. I don't remember the sign. But I head the 2nd class there before me poured some magnesium through the deck and several more below it.
  • I put the HOLLAND into commission in Charleston, and one of the first things we did was make a BIG bronze plaque which we hung on the fire door. I believe it read "Foundry,X-81", with the molders emblem on it. Does anyone remember it ? The bosses weren't too happy with it, but the captain liked it. It hung there for at least the 2 years that I was on her. We also made a bell that was 19" at the flare and (I believe) about 21" high. That was for a Spanish church there in Rota. Did you ever see about 150 pounds of bell metal spread out on a brick deck ? AWESOME ! When it ran out at the parting, the Chaplain wound up standing on the stand bin. I think we poured that bloody thing (in natural bond sand) three times before we got it. What a bastard.
  • Same back to you and to all the other sand pounders and any other veterans. May the next year be the best yet.
  • Happy veteran's day to all
  • Be glad that she even lets you SHARE the dog house.
  • We had to paint the shop to look pretty in Rota. Our 1st Class found a can of black paint that was about as thick as peanut butter and put the sign on the locker closest to the outboard door. Soon as the division officer saw it he made us paint over it. The black was so thick, we than had a 3D sign, but it was the same color gray as the rest of the shop.
  • Craig I really dont remember about the sign
  • Welcome aboard. I was on the Somon Lake in'71-'72 stationed in Charleston, SC. Rode her over to Rota Spain, then transferred. When you were on board, did it still have the big POW-MIA sign visible under the paint on one of the cabinet doors?
  • Hi Steve: Glad to have you back in the sand box. I was a east coast Molder most of the time so can't say that I know you but am sure that you will be able to find fellow Molders that you have been stationed with. Have a great time.

Posablly seeing about starting up a navy molders museum?

I know they dismissed our rate back in 1997. I would hope there are enough of us left to possably  get together and see about creating a museum somewhere  here in the states to preserve our long history and heritage that we all have shared as Molders. Any of you out there please give me a response if you read this Discussion.                                      Thanks.
