Hey Doug,I recall being escorted back to my ship by the friendly,ever-present S P,,along with a couple of shipmates...we were just trying to have a good time, but being out at sea for 30 days is cause for celebration, and any red-blooded tin can sailor can attest to that.Later while in Kingston,Jamaica I had to pull sp duty, and kinda found out all the STUFF the sp guys have to put up with, even with their own shipmates...I always wanted shore duty in Memphis, but it didn't happen.
ditto, I would not want to boot over again! But anything else I did in the Navy, absolutely!
Never had a bar owner turn me in, was always picked up on the street walking.. er staggering.
SPs bailed me out of the San Diego jail twice (D&D), but just dropped me off at my unit.
IF I REMBER LITTLE TON TAVERN SOLD QUART BOTTLES ONLY IN THE 60'S
Anybody remember the Norfolk-Portsmouth shipyards from the early 60s,when there was a tiny little bar called "LITTLE TON TAVERN" right on the base where old mean looking Marines hung out?I mean old wrinkled nasty looking sargeants with about 40 years service in the corps? Well,me and my buddy went there one day,got kinda "wonky",and my buddy tried to pick a fight with these grizzled dudes. One of the sargeants told me to get my buddy out of there, and quick. My immediate reply was something on the order of...YES,SIR!!
Loved the good old boy places. The only thing bad from down town was we had a shipmate knifed to death while partying down town.God rest his soul he was too young to die.
I remember East Main Street well...got thrown out of "DUFFY'S TAVERN" more than once, but he never sicked the SP on me,though, good ole boy that he was.
Been down town many time also to the beach bars too.
lot of old salts how many remeber east main st. in down town Norfolk ?
I guess a lot of us "old salts" are still chewing on "hind sight",because it is always 20/20....I can think of a bunch of things I would do in a different way if I could do it all again...But BOOT CAMP AIN'T ONE OF THEM,even though I have heard some swabbies from my old company from great lakes say they would like to do that all over, again.
