Enlisted or not! This room is for everyone!

All are welcome to join this group!

I just thought there should be a place anyone who served at any time at any command could go and throw out a thought, ask a question or gripe!

  • Yes Chief Hutchinson, the coffee is always hot and fresh! But, we're no dummy's! We know the best place for the coffee is the Chief's Mess! We actually use the enlisted mess for meals!

The eggs are never powdered on this ship! Nor, is the milk!

  • So are the eggs

  • Yes, bug juice is cold, and milk is powdered
  • is the coffee hot.

  • Yes, Jim.  Animal blood.  There were two kinds of foam concentrate.  One was in a grey colored can and was a sodium silicate stuff.  The other was ina red colored can and was made from animal blood.

It didn't segregate what kind of animal(s) it came from, but I assume it was whatever they scraped up off the slaughterhouse deck.

At any rate, if I was to be stranded in a lifeboat/raft at sea for any length of time, I would lose a whole bunch of weight and the supply of that animal blood foam concentrate would be in pretty good shape for putting out any oil fires on the lifeboat/raft!

As for crawling through it for initiation to the Realm of King Neptune, I was never given the opportunity to do that, but even at my age now, if I could get the chance to be a Shellback, I would take it.  Been a Golden Dragon a lot, but never have had a Shellback Certificate...

  • I got out of the Navy in March 65' Honorable Discharge..Was on board the USS FORRESTAL and we were pulled into port I think Naples..

On the day I was to leave the ship the weather got kinda a nasty...windy rainy...there was a discussion as to how me and a couple other guys were going to leave the ship...first they say we'll go on a helo..as we were heading up to the flight deck...one of the guys comes n tells us the weather was too bad at this time and to just wait n see what the weather does..so for like an hour we're just hangin out on the hanger deck...went n got something to eat come back up and they tell us were going an one of the Liberty boats..rain had backed off a little...so we go down the ladder..get in the launch...head for the pier...as sure as water is wet a front came in and before we were half way to the pier we all looked like we just got out of pool..so get on the pier..find a bar..with a stove..stand there till we were some what dry...Truck pulls up out front..guy comes in and says he is to transport us to an AFB where we were catch a flight to ROTA...so now we're on a AIR FORCE base headed to the treminal..there was a C 130 idling by one of the hangers..we pull up behind..climb in ...plane starts to taxi...get out on the runway and on the strip we're supposed to take off from....then plane does a 180 and heads the other way..which took us like an hour..before we got to our take off point...must of set there forever....rev up....idle down....rev up..idle down...FINALLY plane starts moving..picking up speed...smooths out..I look out he small window behind my seat n were still sitting on the run way..one of the crew members starts handing out flight meals..and I gotta say they were lunch meats n chips n stuff and they were pretty good...than we start rolling again and finally lift off..couple of turns and were on the way to ROTA

  • I deep-sixed my last partial pack in May '83,when cigarettes ( el cheapo) in this area were 40 cents a pack...Never regretted it,never looked back.

  • I remember them teaching that in boot camp - that the foam concentrate was edible in a survival situation
  • Isn't that the foam we crawled through during our initiation into shellback nation!  Seems to me it was, but I only remember getting me butt whipped many times and crawling on my hands and knees.. Knees still bad..   I smoked pipes, cigars, cigarettes and do not miss it. been over thirty five years now..But the C-Rats were apply named, I think they used Rat for the meat...

  • Made with animal blood???

3439429894?profile=originalThat's one sure way to attract the sharks!

Good thing for him he never got chance to test the theory!

I'm wondering if we can use this forum and not have people get lost!

I have been informed by our CO, Mr Karr that these forums may work a little better than the "comments" section. So, I am going to try an experiment and see if we can do some house cleaning in this command! Excuse me! Sorry, I meant swab the deck!Somehow the comments have reversed themselves and the most recent comments show up at the end instead of the beginning. We have to be supportive of Doug these days as the site seems to be experiencing a growth spurt, which is good!
