Enlisted or not! This room is for everyone!

I just thought there should be a place anyone who served at any time at any command could go and throw out a thought, ask a question or gripe!

  • Is there a "command" on this site for the 32nd Street San Diego base?  That was where DATC was located in teh early '70's and where the Molder/Patternmaker schools were located. (all gone now!)  Just got my old copy of The Anchor and my Company 214 in July-Sept 1971.  Talk about a bunch of squirrels!  Memories came back looking through it.

  • Never heard of that - sounds interesting though.

  • Has anyone here heard of,or perhaps made, potato candy in the navy?

  • I loved Newport Fried Rabbit....Ribs at Mid-rats they were extra crispy.....Shit on a Shingle with sausage or hamburg....steel beach cook-outs over-all Navy feeds its sailors very well

  • The first time I saw the Long Beach like that it was on the History channel's Mail Call. That was an erie feeling not seeing her signature radar box. Never dawned on me that the mighty "Tommy T" ended up like that. Awful shame that the last real cruiser ended up like that and eventually will endure even worse when she is taken apart totally!

  • I too know that feeling. I saw pics of the USS Long Beach - nothing but a flat hull now. Talked with my nephew who is now active duty navy - what a shock! He is a DC2 and I had to ask what it was - Damage Controlman. His uniforms aren't even the same! Guess it's a younger man's game, now.

  • I know that feeling, there is nothing more heart wrenching then seeing photos of the ship I did two tours on - USS Truxtun being taken apart piece by piece. I spent just under 25% of my career on that ship. That ship took me to places most people only dream about visiting!

  • Just finished reading all the post on this site and it brought back a lot of

    memories...Thanks to all.

Went aborad the USS McKean DDR-784 in '60 just out of RM"A" school

to be assigned to mess cooking for four weeks. Scullery duty for the duration.

Sea sick for a week's gunnery practice in San Diego..back to Long Beach and

then off to Pearl for another two weeks at sea (sea Sick) and a week after that.

It was a little tough working in all that heat and living on peanut butter and

crackers...Never got sick again after leaving Pearl though..Thank God..

In 1961 was stationed at  Naval Radio Receiving Facility Kami Seya, Japan.

Great duty, liberty and good food. Made RM2 there and really thought about

making a career out of the Navy..Couldn't come to terms with the OIC so I

went home.  Today my ship is gone and my shore station is gone and so, it

seems, is a lot of tradition I liked in the Navy.

  • i was a cs in va 15 from 1973 to 1977

  • I reported aboard the USS Vreeland FF-1068 and started mess cooking in the Chiefs Mess man it was gravy!! I brought them their meals via the cubby nook that connected to our galley. It was a decent gig can't complain about that one. During work week in boot camp Orlando they set me up  in the scullery and I developed a rash from the rubber gloves. They then placed me in the womens mess where they had me changing the milk containers once again pretty gravy. This was when boot camp was mens side and womens side no intermingling!!

I saw an old post about age requirements to advance.I don't think there was an age requirement.I was a kiddie cruiser.Joined 2 weeks before my 18th birthday.I hit the testing schedule just right.I was a Radioman when they were rating at 100% during the Cuban missle crisis.I made RM2/E5 in less than 3 years.

I'm wondering if we can use this forum and not have people get lost!

I have been informed by our CO, Mr Karr that these forums may work a little better than the "comments" section. So, I am going to try an experiment and see if we can do some house cleaning in this command! Excuse me! Sorry, I meant swab the deck!Somehow the comments have reversed themselves and the most recent comments show up at the end instead of the beginning. We have to be supportive of Doug these days as the site seems to be experiencing a growth spurt, which is good!
