  • You'll be gratified to know that those of us that followed (1972) carried on the tradition and sang quite well also!

  • I have no idea of what the blood draw was for.  Was curious if you had it as well.

CC Krider was a good CC.  I remember we had a song about him, but can no longer remember the lyrics.  While I was there, we had a well disiplined group who enjoyed singing.  And, I always thought we were quite good.

  • Camburn,

Sorry for the delay in replying, I was on the road for a few days. I do not recall a weekly blood draw. I remember the daily dose of V-cillin K which I think someone figured was for prevention of menengitis.

I ran into Krider after I left and he seemed to be a pretty squared away fellow. I know I was glad we didn't have the CC that D&B Corp had, It seemed like every other week one of their guys was doing the old seabag workout.

I'm curious about your blood draw routine. Let me know if you find out what it was for.

  • Hi Louis:

Yes......DJ Krider.  I couldn't remember his name, but I certainly do now.

Quick question of interest.  Every week the med tecks would draw three vials of blood from us.  Did they do the same to you when you were there?

  • Hi Camburn, You must have come along just I was leaving. I left in late May of '71. Our CC was DJ Krider.

  • I was in the Choir during the summer of 1971.  Was a great time to sing.

  • was in BJC april 1065 went to nam after boot was messed up have memorie loss but remember the enjoyment of singing in th bjc. would like to find pictures of my troop if possible. thanks my email is bobwwallace23@gmail.com. would love to get together and sing again.

  • I was in the Blue Jackets Choir in 1961.  I was in company 263 and was given a rating of recruit petty officer 3rd class just because I liked to sing.  Our High School Choir (Alexander Ramsey HS) won the Minnesota State Vocal Music championship 6 straight years, so obviously we had good teaching by Donald Brost.  My Navy years were the best years of my life.  I recently took on the duties of Secretary of the USS James E. Kyes Association (DD-787): http://ussjek.org.  It's almost like being back on board again.   I thought I lost my singing voice over the years, but I surprised myself at a party a few nights ago.

  • I was a memeber of the BJC Oct.-Dec of 1964.  When I got to the barracks it looked like heaven on earth.  Guys were hanging out sunbathing, eating food snatched from the mess hall, doing everything non-reg.  A week after I joined the company two black shirted trouble shooters came in to straighten us out.  It was hell on earth - except for the shared vocal music.

I think the Chapel is still standing at "Liberty Station".  Not much else is.  Wait, the U.S.S. Recruit is still there too.

So many of us went through NTC over the years.  How did it just fade away?

  • I was with the BJC San Diego NTC March 1967.  The Company Commander, a Senior Chief at the time, was a real hellion, tougher than my regular company commander was.  I thought I'd won the lottery by getting in, only to find it tougher!Any videos from that time period available?

BJC Feb 1968

Greetings all.  I entered San Diego boot camp the last week of Jan 1968.  I moved into the BLJ they had not long retgurned from tge Hollywood trip where they recorded the record.  Does anyone have a copy of that?  I would so love to hear it again.  My copy went away many years ago.  Searched YouTube but no luck.  Those were special times.  Not only out voices but our style of marching with the "lean back" turns.  I became the educational PO and will never forget my office with the hidden floor…

new to this group

Glad we called it a choir back then... truly was ! I was in BJC in April/May 1969 ... Trying to find any recording of our voices from that time frame or in general from the 1960's or early 70's ... Somehow the little vinyl recording we got got misplaced over the years. I truly loved being part of that choir more than anything I have ever done since. I dont remember much of the specifics but I do remember my recruit company commander chewing me out for auditioning and being accepted ... He was a…

bluejacket choir 1967

I saw the photo that John Vaclav posted and it really looked familiar.  Then I saw the date.I also graduated boot in Sept 67 but was in section 4, I believe one week behind John.  Anyway,am adding my graduation picture. In Johns picture, the front row, the man to the right of the tall guy in the middle, I am sure was themilitary rcpo Mitchell from Kansas.  Second row man in the middle, was that Brockhouse?  Andthe second row far right is Gary Bible.  He was a real good friend from Texas.   Hard…

FORT ALLEN PONCE 1970-1972

I was stationed at Fort Allen from Jan 1970 to Jan 1972 as a Radioman. It being somewhat of a small base one got to know most everyone. I remember that the chow hall was the tops at this base and they won the awards to go along the that. Also I remember the outdoor movie screne. Just haveing some flash backs as I had Googled maps of the base and see that it is still there and under the Army control now, or National Guard. Don't know if you remember me or not, but if you were on a different watch…
