  • I remember getting off base for a performance only one time. That was a Navy League dinner. It was a pretty large gathering, I seem to remember Alan Shepard was attending the dinner as a special guest. We sang the Armed Forces Medley which closed with Anchors Aweigh, Naturally, the place went nuts when we got to that part.
  • Our Company number was 4007. We also made several tapes of the National Anthem and the Navy Hymn that I can swear that I have heard myself in when TV stations used them to go off the air in the old days of TV. One of our favorite eating spots in San Diego was at SEVEN SEAS in La Jolla. At one point in time the musicians union in San Diego got jealous of us singing in the eating establishments around town. We really couldn't help it. When they asked us to sing, we would always do so. Most of the time we would get our meals comped for doing so.......
  • Will check after getting done with class today. Yes, still going to school.
  • Like Thomas I got to graduate several times. Sang in so many Chapel services i knew more songs for Catholic mass than I did protestant which educated this ole Texas Baptist boy. Got to Sing at graduation for Co 573 that I started with.
Steven, if you check the blog link I posted on Glynco you will find several photos of the old Blimp hangers there.
  • Who can forget singing for the attending parents, etc, before graduation. As far as marching, no one could touch us! My dad still has a movie (super 8) of my final graduation.
  • Those months in the BJC were priceless. We were very fortunate to have liberty every weekend. We sang all over the San Diego area. One of the highlights of my time with the BJC was doing the National Anthem at a Charger football game. I like to tell my grandkids that I graduated from boot camp on 10 different occassions. My very first graduation exercise was the first week that I was a member. One of the guys scheduled to march got sick and I was selected to take his place. The rest as they say is history.....
  • I believe it was the first week of January. I can only remember by events...... I remember over Christmas our company commander brought in a television for us to watch, but that was Co. 756. Best guess, January. I believe somewhere in the archives (an old trunk) is my certificate from being a member.
  • Steven,
When exactly did you become a member of the Blue Jacket Choir. I was there from October, 1969 thru December , 1969. After boot I attended RM "A" School in San Diego.
  • Yes, AC/A in 1970. I arrived right around 1 March, or so. Then there was the time at Special Services, then AC/A School in the old blimp hanger (hole in the roof).
  • Steven, You were at AC-A in 70? I came back to Glynco in May 70' for GCA. we may have overlaped. I have a Glynco command set up on Navy vets but you are the first that might have an interest.

BJC Feb 1968

Greetings all.  I entered San Diego boot camp the last week of Jan 1968.  I moved into the BLJ they had not long retgurned from tge Hollywood trip where they recorded the record.  Does anyone have a copy of that?  I would so love to hear it again.  My copy went away many years ago.  Searched YouTube but no luck.  Those were special times.  Not only out voices but our style of marching with the "lean back" turns.  I became the educational PO and will never forget my office with the hidden floor…

new to this group

Glad we called it a choir back then... truly was ! I was in BJC in April/May 1969 ... Trying to find any recording of our voices from that time frame or in general from the 1960's or early 70's ... Somehow the little vinyl recording we got got misplaced over the years. I truly loved being part of that choir more than anything I have ever done since. I dont remember much of the specifics but I do remember my recruit company commander chewing me out for auditioning and being accepted ... He was a…

bluejacket choir 1967

I saw the photo that John Vaclav posted and it really looked familiar.  Then I saw the date.I also graduated boot in Sept 67 but was in section 4, I believe one week behind John.  Anyway,am adding my graduation picture. In Johns picture, the front row, the man to the right of the tall guy in the middle, I am sure was themilitary rcpo Mitchell from Kansas.  Second row man in the middle, was that Brockhouse?  Andthe second row far right is Gary Bible.  He was a real good friend from Texas.   Hard…

FORT ALLEN PONCE 1970-1972

I was stationed at Fort Allen from Jan 1970 to Jan 1972 as a Radioman. It being somewhat of a small base one got to know most everyone. I remember that the chow hall was the tops at this base and they won the awards to go along the that. Also I remember the outdoor movie screne. Just haveing some flash backs as I had Googled maps of the base and see that it is still there and under the Army control now, or National Guard. Don't know if you remember me or not, but if you were on a different watch…
