Come on in Shipmates. Have a seat in the First Class Lounge. We'll play a little Acey-Deuce and swap sea stories. As always, you have front of the line previleges on the Mess Decks.

  • I am very proud to be a Petty Officer First Class, but I guess I am like everyone here who worked and dreamed of one day putting on our "anchors".  I am proud of my brother first classer here.

  • Enlisted in 1973 and retired in 1996 as an SM1 while in the Navy Reserves ( Fort Schuyler, NY.).  Like many of you, I passed the advancement exam with flying colors, but was not selected. I only took it once and had even extended my reitrement, to see if I could retire as a Chief Signalman. I always belonged to a Signal "Gang", no other rate in the Navy has used that slang term for a tightly knit group. In 2004 the rate was absorbed by the QM rating. I can see the advantages and disadvantages of this organizational restructuring, but, many of us sigs have a sense of loss.

I invite all skivy wavers to the Signalman Command on the Navy Veteran page and also on Face Book's US Navy Signalman page. Lets shoot the breeze!

  • In July of '84 I changed over from YN1 to MA1 and it was just the best decision that I made.  Had a wonderful career in both ratings, but enjoyed being a MA my last six years in the go old Navy.  Bravo Zulu to all First Class Petty Officers in at rates. Great Job!

  • had a great job as a bm1 wouldnt change it for the world had so much fun in all the first class messes i was in Dame miss it

  • So sorry to hear that Louis. Hope your getting better

  •  I did enjoy being a Petty Officer First Class. I was one of the first group in the MA rate. Being in the Reserves I did enjoy helping  put together the training programs. i did have dreams of becoming a Chief, but two automobile accident ended my career just short of being able to retire.

  • I Passed the Chief's exam every time...but being a Photomate, an overmanned rate and not being of retirement age....the only way I was going to make Chief was through S.O.Y. meritorious advancement or a MAJOR war and watching the obits.

  • I am proud that I remained as a Petty Officer First Class for over ten years and retired the same.  I didn't want the politics of being an E-7 even though I passed the test but was not advanced.  I feel that the Navy is run by the PO1's in it.

  • The first time I took the E7 exam was the last time before the boards. I missed by .2 points. Then the rest PNA's, Only made one or two OMs except fro two time when there were ten. Never could figure that out. But having been a 1st most of the time I worked and if benifited me when I retired and moved to Hughes Aircraft to put together optical systems. Been working for the last 27 years and if has been good.

  • I SO MUCH AGREE WITH YOU
