USS Vulcan AR5
I was in her Pattern Shop 1957 to 1960.Keeping skills alive I learned in Class A Patternmakers school and three years on the Vulcan I have retired as a carpenter/cabinet maker and now make furniture and musical instruments.I tried teaching Industrial Arts, but found it wasn't my forte. Neither was teaching science. I was carrying a full shit can shit can down the gangway ,tripped and fell.
I got disability and medically retired from navy and service connected from the VA.
I worked on a friends charter boat and then on Offshore Oilfield vessels .I got a unlimited able body seaman ticket ,100 ton Captains License in 1979 and 500 to 1981.I was a Officer in the Merchant my 500 ton became a 1500 ton and worked as 3 rd mate on msc ship during desert storm and shield carring tanks etc from Charleston to Dammon Saudi Arabia
I worked on all kind of boats from crew, supply,tugs,tankers ,ro-ro’s and The MV American Cormorant , a semi-submersible float-on/float-off ship, the only one in the US Flag Merchant Fleet. The ship has the ability to submerge its cargo deck to load and discharge its floating cargo of Army watercraft. Her submersible capacity allows her to lift exceptionally heavy loads.

I got a medical and thought I would never look back .I have been making molds carbon fiber vartm and thermoplastics .I have also done powder coating and the skills of molder and paternmaker has helped.
I have a cabinet shop but not the skills of a patternmaker.I use foam ,plaster of Paris ,clay etc
Hats off to you guys,I wish I was not turning and burning more comsaw and had more time to spend in pattern shop.
