Talos 49 Radar School
FTM3 John Kilburn. I attended Talos "C" school as a push button third class P.O. Class DD7402. Remember getting an "outstanding" award at base wide dress inspection. Reported for "award", found it to be standing watch in cripto building...LOL. Were only 5 of us in the class, one went AWOL after visiting Vallejo church never to return. Island now all condos.... Enjoy the grad picture, I'm the standing third class...outstanding sailor, huh?

I went to TALOS (TATTE) "C" School at Mare Island during the fall of 1968. Graduated in December 1968. There were four in my class. From there I went to Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach, CA. I was there with the USS Long Beach, CGN-9 in 1971-72. Should would like to find some of my classmates. Great memories. Some sad ones, too.
I went to school twice here, in 1979. I went to KY-8 maintenance C School, then was sent, in typical Navy fashion, to a tennant command that had no KY-8s. So in a few weeks I was sent back for KW-7 maintenance C School. Many of my best Navy memories are from my time there, sure would like to find some of my old friends.
I attended school there from May to November 1984. Nato Seasparrow Surface to Air Missile System.
Got to good 'old "Nightmare Island" in July of 86. Loved the area, went camping at either Lake Berryessa, or Clear Lake every weekend off!
Met Admiral Richard O'Kane at the O club where he was signing his book "Wahoo"...still have it and always brings back memories of my time climbing "3D Hill"
I graduated from the crypto repair school before it was part of the CSTSC. That was in 1962 and the school was upstairs in the Shop 67 building. I graduated from two schools, the KW-22 and the KO-5. The first was 12 weeks and the second was 18 weeks and they ran concurrent. That was my 2nd tour at Mare Island. I had been there earlier, '58/59 at the radio transmitter site on the north end of Mare Island. I later returned for a 3rd tour in 1976 as the senior instructor at the crypto repair school (CTMS) which was then part of CSTSC. The school had moved from shop 67 to a building that had once been the old hospital morgue. It was on Railroad Ave just across the parking lot from the galley. I retired from there in 1977. I made one last trip to the school in the 1980's recruiting for the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
I haven't found anyone on the web who was there that long ago. I was only 20 years old when I started there, probably the youngest instructor. Maybe that's why I can't find anyone else: they're all pretty old.
Are there any of you out there?
The school head was Lt. Cdr. Fain Curtis. The Technical Training Officer was Lt. George Tyler. The head of the computer department was Senior Chief Frank Tirimacco.
I was an DS3 until about May of 1963 when I made second class. There was another DS2 instructor, Larry Kriegle.
Does anyone have any memories to share from those early years?
