Crypto School

OK,someone help me out !! I attended "Crypto Repair School" on Mare Island, way back in 1964.Actually 2 of them,1544 and 1547 (KW7 & KWR37).Yes, they were puttting some of us ETRs  through there to help out the ETNs that usually did the repairs. My class attended the night class sessions (turned out to be OK as we got out at 12 midnight and didn't have to be back for school until 4PM)

Anyway back to the help part ! I keep seeing all these letters designating several rates  and all the different schools and am wondering exactly what the schools I attended were designated as ????

As a side note, when I got seperated I thought about doing the reserve thing and when the CO found out I had Crypto , he wanted me assigned  to the CT  group.

Hey, Thanks for your service guys

  • Lee I attended Crypto School at Mare Island in 1964 as an ETR also. Same schools. I was on a Destroyer USS Buchanan and no one aboard was qualified on the Crypto gear. For a time I acted as the Registered Pubs Officer as the billet was open and I had the clearance. On the ship the ET gang were jacks of all trades based on the quality of ET A school. I personally worked on UHF radios, Elint gear, TACAN, Loran as well as the radars and repeaters while in Westpac off Yankee Station.

Let me know if your still looking for info.

I attended crypto school on Mare Island directly from "A" school in 1966. I was assigned to night classes, and we night students were housed with the day students. Our returning from class after midnight proved to be an annoying problem, so they housed us in an old BQE. What great quarters, we each had our own room! I remember one instructor Clyde Jernigan(sp?). I can't remember the other instructor's name, but he was married and let us out of class early so he could go home.

I remember classes were held in a big cement cube in the middle of a parking lot. Also, being in San Francisco in 1966 was fantastic.

  • Hi Lee. I was there as a student in '73 (KG-13), '77 (37/14) and '81-'84 as a KG-14 Instructor then CISO.
