  • Thanks Tommy for the "Welcome". Compared to you, I'm just a young one. Yes, We did our thing, and are exclusive members of a brotherhood that can never be taken away from us.
  • Welcome: Mike & S.D.it make me feel a little old myself after being retied for almost 32 years. The main thing is we did our thing back in the day.
  • Can't belive I've been retired longer than some of the rookies have in.
  • Hello to all in this group. Just joined this site, and am still learning my way around. Retired as a HTC back in "96" from SIMA San Diego. Have to agree with you Tommy about Australia being the best liberty ports. While on the U.S.S. Cochrane way back in "79", we did a SouthPac cruise. Visited several of the South Sea islands, along with two ports in New Zealand, five ports in Australia including one in Tasmania, Indonesia, and of course Subic. Have had a great time in every place that I had traveled during my 20 yrs., but Australia definitely stands out as my all-time favorite!
  • I read the coments and talk about years, i am a boot compared to these sea dogs. I enlisted in 1974 and retired in 1994 out of San Diego Ca. Fighter Jets was what I worked, now I am working for the Army in Corpus Christi Army Depot keeping em flying for the war
  • Ahoy Shipmates. I just joined the site and I just wanted to say hey to this group of Rusty Old Bolts. I am a Learning Center Facilitator over at NAS Oceana these days. I'm still working with young Sailors every day. As much as things have changed it never ceases to amaze me as to how they remain the same.
  • If I was gonna tavel, there one place I would like see again.1962 when I was on the USS Navasota AO 106 we went down under my first time across the Equator we stopped in Hobart,Tasmania when tided up to pier, if you tossed white hat on the pier women would fight over it then come looking for you. The only place I've ever been after your watch you could go on liberty. I never seen so many women over 6 feet tall I don't if was being on bottom of world or what. We also went Melboure, and Adelaide Australia best liberty i've ever had . If I was ever going to jump ship it would be the place.
  • Thats alright Tommy, I made an error in my comment also. I said 380 yen to the dollar, when it was actually 360. You reckon old age is settin' in ? IF I was gonna travel, there are three places that I'd want to see again - Sasebo, Pota Spain, and Singapore.
I might take a piss on Nam as we flew over it, but that would be my only "gift" to them.
  • Dan, I must have been asleep when I wrote my last comment.1958, I was on the USS Midway Sasebo was not to up to date yet. 1972 is when we move to Japan my oldest one played with Japanise kids talked with then very good. I use to take her me to a little bar down the hill from where we lived I would so she could talk to mamasun for me.

One Huge Event

Greetings fellow Navy retirees! I served for twenty five years, and have told many sea stories. I like to categorize them just a little by putting them into Liberty wild tale type things, and Operations this is what happened on an exercise or evolution type thing. Do you have a really BIG EVENT that was very cool or maybe not so cool that you would like to tell the rest of us old salts?
