The eighth ship to bear the name, she was originally named USS Kearsarge, but renamed in honor of the CV-8, which was lost in October of 1942. In 1998, HORNET opens to the public as an aircraft carrier museum in Alameda, Ca.

I am a veteran of the USS Coral Sea CVA 43, but currently am a Volunteer Docent in Training on the USS Hornet. Although it has been 45 years since I was at sea, the memories come flooding back as I familiarize myself with the Hornet.
