The eighth ship to bear the name, she was originally named USS Kearsarge, but renamed in honor of the CV-8, which was lost in October of 1942. In 1998, HORNET opens to the public as an aircraft carrier museum in Alameda, Ca.

  • I was aboard Hornet during her last days of commissioned service. I reported just before Apollo 12 in October 1969 and was part of the decommissioning crew in Bremerton, Washington until May of 1970. At the time, I was an MM1 who was a qualified nuclear operator. The assignment was temporary while the Navy was trying to assemble pre-commissioning crews for the Nimitz Class carriers, but I ended up on instructor duty instead and later made Chief, Warrant Officer, and LDO and spent most of the rest of my career on submarine repair billets.
  • Came aboard Dec. 29, 1957. Made the Hornet's last Far East Cruise. On our return to Deigo, CA. I only had a few days left before I was to be discharged so they left me off at DES Base, Deigo. This was July 2, '58 till my paper work was done and was discharged July 8, 1958. I was in "E" division with the IC group. Good bunch of guys.
