1957-1960
I was stationed aboard the Mighty Midway from 1957-1960 and worked in the office of "G" Division. My off duty job consisted of being a Disc Jockey on station KMID from 2000-2200 every night at sea. My program was 'Eddies Tune Shop'.Still in contact with about 50 shipmates and have had 4-reuinions since the Midway became a museum in San Diego. Two of the reunions were in San Diego and we were able to go aboard each time.We couldn't believe how small the hatches were and how steep the ladders…

I served aboard USS Midway from 1970 to 1974. I was in S-6 & AIMD (IM-1) Division. I served with some of the BEST Navy personnel. I am in contact with a few to this day. I have visited the museun 3 times and I still enjoy going. Always Promote the MIDWAY MAGIC. AK 1 James A. Brown
I first saw Midway while she was tied up at the peir at Alameda in 1971, I was with VFP-63 Det, on the Hancock. I contributed to the drive to get her to San Diego.
The Mrs. and I took a tour in 2009 while we were visiting in SD. I would like to be a part of the Midway Family when we retire to San Diego, in November 2012. You have every right to be so proud of her (CVA-41).
I was with VF-151 and mostly TAD to Aviation Supply (S-6 Division) and had Mr. Allen for our Div. Officer as well as Mr. Henley who's nickname was Mr. Mutley...if you knew him, then you'll understand the nickname...also Master Chief Blue and Senior Chief Armentrott who was responsible for the most successful Coke Mess on the boat. I also stood the permanent Security Watch with a different Marine each duty day...bad times back during the WestPac Cruise of '72/'73...which began on or around the 11th of April of '72 and ended on the 3rd of March of '73...eleven long damn months! Sorry, but no sympathy for these young ones who gripe about their six month cruises.
Was my first ship while in the Navy and by far the best one I ever served on. ( 1985-89)
I was with Carrier Group ONE from approx. June 1970 through December 1971
(the MIDWAY was our Flagship (when she was homeported at NAS Alameda)).
Notes of interest:
1) When Admiral Zumwalt (the then CNO) wanted four carriers in the Gulf of
Tonkin, she left early (May 1971). From the Golden Gate, she made it to Subic
Bay in 10-days (the CO was Captain Sylvester Foley, USN).
a) When Admiral Zumwalt made a visit to the Gulf of Tonkin, he chose
to spend the night aboard MIDWAY.
b) In approx. August, MIDWAY had an unexpected plane crash on the
flight deck. The ship went to General Quarters (and the crew (including the
staff, either became a fire fighter or corpsman). The MIDWAY was completely
operational six hours after the crash.
I will close by saying that I consider it to be an "EXTREME HONOR" to be in
your presence,, take care and God bless shipmate,,
I was aboard from Jan 71 to Sept 73 when she left for Japan. I am back aboard now as an employee of the greatest Historical Naval Ship in the world. I look for shipmates every day and have had great conversations. Everyone states the same thing about her 'The best ship I ever served on." Be proud Midway sailors and show your spirit and energy to the world.
