  I am trying to find out some info about a recruit that committed suicide in late May or Early June of 1988 at RTC San Diego. I was in Company 80 - I think- but this recruit was near my company but not the same company. Does anyone have any thoughts on where else I can look for info? I remember a rumor of it being a chief's son.

  My time at RTC San Diego was coming to an end in just a few weeks and we were issued our dress uniforms and were going to have our first Dress inspection. To make sure we were going to be ready for Graduation day ceremonies. We were all standing at ease waiting for things to start. Our Company Commander was dressed in his CPO blues and a seagull flew over and dropped a bomb on the Chief's hat and shoulder. It was hard not to laugh but that would have been stupid. Chief Gray left to clean up and put our Recruit CC in charge while he was gone.  RCPO Larry Peterson was not known for being "in Charge" and we were not being watched very closely. The smoking lamp had not been lit for us at all that day and I was craving a smoke. I decided to walk a very short distance to some barracks and go behind the building and have a few puffs. I had just gotten my cigarette lit and out of nowhere comes a man in an officers uniform. He took one look at me and came over and busted me. He got my name and Co. number and later that evening I got to attend my first and only "Marching Party" It wasn't a fun party

  I recall the first three weeks of boot camp in the primary training area. We had to cross a bridge to get to what was called "worm Island" Most days we would cross the bridge to attend training on the main base, but we were isolated from the rest of the recruits in advance recruit training. we were treated like worms until we finished Primary and crossed the bridge to go to our new barracks on the main base. After that day we never marched across the bridge again and I was very happy about that. We were treated better on the other side like we had proven some measure of worth

  I arrived a RTC San Diego in June of 1968.  The beginning of an awesome growing period and adventure.  Would do it all over again and would recommend it for some of the lost souls of 2017.

  The three show RTC Great Lakes, Sept. 1972, Company 242... Guess I goofed on the year.  ha ha   It's hell to get old.

  Willman, That link didn't work but I'm a free member over there and had initially entered all my duty stations, including RTC San Diego. Somehow, they've changed things around and I am listed as "(Cadre/Faculty Staff)" and I can't see any company numbers anymore. I don't know how to navigate around since they changed things.

  I entered boot at RTC in September of 1976. I was assigned to Company 242 but I graduated with a later company. I've never seen anyone from boot camp in my later years but some things are still clear as a bell. Like when I answered "OK" to my CC for some minor thing. I snapped to attention and yelled out "Yes, Sir!" He grunted then walked away. I got lucky that day and it never happened again! Sure wish I could remember his name. He was a Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate. He said he liked being up on deck where all the action was.
