Just take the Slater out for a quick trip around the Atlantic. Let it bob around a while, Do a few trips walking the bulkheads and trying to stay seated on the head while you do your business. Then try to eat in the mess without making a mess, try and stay in bed at night and after a while, you will be able to call yourself and "Old Salt" like the rest of us...
Saw the Deck of the USS Annapolis, USS Sheldon, and USS Hornet. Never saw any shore duty..But I did see a lot of the world.. and some places I just as soon forget...
One of the things I remember was watching as the ships of the fleet would come and go through the bay.
and thinking to myself as a young lad of 17, "someday soon I will get to be on one of those and see the world"! Not! They didn't tell me that I may go through my enlistment and never see the deck of a ship!
I was at IC-A school at RTC in 1989. I had so much fun
Thanks for the link, Jim. I remember being on watch (guarding the clotheslines) and looking out over the harbor towards North Island......
For those of you that may reminisce about those days! I found myself keeping this webcam upon my screen and remembering the view!
http://sundiegolive.com/
It pans, zooms in and gives you a nice view of the Midway. Also, with it all lit up at night. Only a corner of North Island shows. but, you can see the island of one of the carriers berthed there. Switch to the Shelter Island cam and see Point Loma. Too bad it doesn't 360 and show our old stomping ground. ( I mean "marching grounds")
Be sure to "full screen" it! Unlike most other webcams out there this one is a live stream that almost make you feel you are looking out the window! Just like those days in Camp Nimitz!
Charles you were right behind me, Co 402 1966..
Happy New Year to all
Thanks Thomas,
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family. Also Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all my Navy Vets friends. Please remember our active duty vets who are away from home during this time of the year. I know we all remember some of those times.
