I have to agree Chief, like Easter and Christmas, RETAIL and BIG Business has taken away the meaning of the holidays and given them "time off," meanings. Memorial day has given way to, sales, food and beverage, and the recreation vehicles, cars and so on and so on. What a shame, the loss of life sons, daughters and family members, is only to the family. In my case, 60,000.lives meant the loss of a comrade friend, brother, as does my feelings for all losses.
I had a comment from a high school class mate on Vet Day - she flat out said do not tell me to have a happy Memorial Day! Melanie is absolutely right! She lost her son in the Navy. We have become and I am including myself that we view Memorial day as a three day weekend - back yard barbies etc. We have lost the meaning of the day, it should not be another extra day off from work, it should be a day of rememberance of those that gave their lives for this country! Wheather they persihed in combat or from hazardous chemicals/radiation that were not known to be hazardous at the time.
Thomas I think that most people that served in that country would never want to go back. The military had a magazine - do not remember the name of it - in the late 70's I think it did a spread of Nam and a vacation spot - it raised all kinds of hate and discontent! I am sure Saigon is a beautiful place now, the govt is going for tourism.
Thomas, I want to thank you for putting the link up. It reminds me of those friends who went before and never returned home. Having been there when no replacements were being sent brings back an awarness of how important it was for all to remember those who died. After leaving Nam I have never wanted to go back due to the loss of so many friend there. Again I thank you it was a reminder to all and God bless those who serve today.
You are so right Chief, time stands still for no one. Have a friend who was there at the last few days and the evacuation. He went to visit last month, took wife and sent pics. Not sure I could convince my wife to go, but he was amazed at the regeneration of the country. Can't say Saigon would be my vacation spot.
Remember coming home and the negativity here in the US. Most of us agreed it was not our place to be, but we were loyal to our country and followed orders. To bad the people didn't understand that.
Thomas time waits for no one! I was never in Nam, the closest I got was 3d Med Batt on Okinawa 74-75. From a few thousand miles away I witnessed (thru the media) Nam evacuations and the Myaguez rescue. A lot of our brothers and sisters lost their lives in that foreign country and returning vets got harrassed and spit on. Of course at that time we had the orange clad Hari what evers preaching love and peace in the major airports.
Sorry forgot this.

For us that were in Vietnam, the past president of our Blue Water Sailors group sent me this link. It might be of interest to you or not. The mere fact of the age of the article, makes me say, "where did time go?"
2 million bucks for a condo at RTC ? Heck they paid me 87.00 a month to stay there, lol !
No thanks Thomas if I had 2 mill to spend it would not be on an old barracks or what ever at RTC/NTC. I was stationed on that base twice - first of course was Recruit Training and the second time was for Instructor Training in 88.
