  • I don't know how you guys remember all this stuff!  I know in '86, we started out in the barracks closer to the airport.  I don't remember what that part was called.  Someone here called it the "R&O side."  We were there for a week or two, then packed up and went to the other side.  I don't think we went back to the south side again, except for PT.  That was on a "grinder" right beside the airport.  We had to carry our PT towels with us.  As for the ball caps... we never had them.  We wore white hats everywhere.  All of us had our grinder reminders across our foreheads.  I ended up stationed on a submarine tender in Charleston, SC.  We never went anywhere, so I never got to see the world.  Saw a lot of the east coast though!  The longest we were ever out for at one time was 8 days.

  • I miss the sea, but for me it is just a trip down to the ocean and get in a kayak.  Got to work to get it moving but it is fun.  We had one guy who could do nothing right.  He actually told the CC that his mother always made his bed.  About that time most of us started for the doorways.. I never saw a face turn that red that quick. The CC had him in the Trash bin for an hour.  Then sent him to the 4050 co.  Now those guys had a hard boot camp!

  • I don't remember the 'R&O' side of NTC being called worm island or squirrel island....but in early '72 we did wear ball caps till we moved over to advanced training. And Mr. Ford, I remember the smoke stained t-shirts that we breathed through fighting the compartment fire at Carrol Canyon....I wore my smokestained tee for the next 4 years, all that detergent couldn't get it out.....

  • Anyone have BMC Carter as their Company Commander? He was mine in July 74

Company 807.. Can't begin to count the times we were told that we were being sent back to start all over again if we would not march right...hahahah

Oh and I remember what happened to one guy that did not make his bed right...

He had to lay on his back and kick his feet in the air and yell to the top of his lungs... "  Company Commander, I am a dead cockroach"... Then he made him take a bed sheet and tie it around his neck and run around the grinder  with hands stretched out playing superman yelling " Even Superman can't make a Navy Style bunk right"...something to that effect....

Hey... but only 9 weeks.. Plus two... Is it just me? I sure miss the days at sea..... OK..... when I am bored around the house... I did like the Port of Calls though

  • Well we were a "rowdy" group for sure. However the stories that come through this site are funny, heart warming, sad for the loses. It is good that we communicate, through this site as we all have some tales and for the most part VERY GOOD. On my way to SD at the end of the month and will be checking out NTC for sure.Hope to bring back some news and memories.

  • We were called a lot different names, I had my 19th birthday at RTC San Diego. In 72 my # in the draft was like 32 or something - years before that I was in the 200's! Looking back I am glad of that, I made it a career and no regrets! I got to go to places that most people only dream about!

  • I know the comments that can't be said because of a name.  I was everything from Monkey to well, lets say very descripted words..  I forget what the island was call, we were called Squirrels, not to mention several lady parts too. I went thru in late 66 July, had my 21st birthday in boot camp.  I celebrated at a marching party.. Oh well, must have been something I said..

  • Interesting - when I went thru boot that little island that had the modern barracks was referred to as "worm island" I remember the day we had to walk - not march- to the other side of the base and take up residence in the old wooden barracks. I don't ever recall wearing a ball cap in boot camp, I recall our CC being upset when we went to fire fighting day and he did not have us wear our "night tee shirt" oh well one blackened tee shirt! I remember the clothes lines on the other side of the base, we had to guard them, no clothes on them - lol! Just another part of getting thru boot camp! I have had rum and coke, vodka and 7 and many others, now a days the poision is christian brothers and diet 7 up (need to look after my slim trim school boyish figure) lol - lost that a long time ago! The two bottles of rum that I posted pictures of in here, I bought just to get pictures of, they are both in the cupboard and if I drink any is yet to be determined!

Terry as far as demerits go - try going thru boot with the last name of Ford - can not say in here what was said to me on "worm island."

  • Some interesting memories from this group. Interesting comparisons also with some changes from yer to year over training procedures. For instance in 1967 the 'squirrel' side of the recruit training we all wore our white hat every day.  When we went to firefighting training was the only time we wore the baseball cap.  The other recruits would hollar out, "going to a baseball game?" They didn't know that we were ahead of them in training and they too would someday wear the fabled 'baseball cap'.  I also got to wear the squeeze head watch cap to a marching party once.  Got a demerit for making an unsquare tie on the clothes line.  Interesting though that I was the laundry petty officer and was checking everyone elses.  I was in Washington DC last week and noticed two young sailors in dress blues.  WIth all the number of different uniforms that the Navy wears I thought they had done away with the blues.  The fabric and cut is the same but the weave seems much finer and more comfortable. I used to be that skinny too!  When we got to Okinawa after Viet Nam the drink favorite was Rum and Coke.  Only the rum was 151 proof.  Sweet..Terry HM-2

  • I went through RTC in 72, my return to NTC was 88 when I went through Instructor Training School, alot of it was still intact. Never had a desire to go to the "chow hall" maybe I should have. I guess I thought the places I was stationed would be there forever, I guess we all thought that to a certain extent!

Now anyone know who Sailor Jerry is?3439419583?profile=original
