  • I vividly remember the trip from "worm island" over to the main base and getting our old wooden WWII vintage barracks. The barracks on "worm island" were more modern - :) Do not remember gedunk machines next to the barracks, I do remember marching around the clothes lines guarding them with my vintage rifle (most likely an M1), as if someome would want to steal the clothes lines.

  • Back to gedunks for a minute - I remember after crossing the bridge and moving into the old wooden barracks, our CC told us we could use the gedunk candy bar machines during breaks and off time. They were located right out the front door, and I think cigarette machines were there too, but I didn't smoke. PayDays became my favorite candy bar! Yes, I remember a march or two the company took over to the base gedunk where they sold ice cream sundae's, but I sure don't remember ever splurging for one!

  • The Navy does not have civilians - they have "Sand Crabs." :)

  • Not just the boot scene! Sh.t, cussing was part of Navy life! Though, you had to watch your f..kin language around the Naval Hospitals! Too many g.d da.n'd civilians around! Of course after the Navy we all became proper English speaking and polite vets!

  • cussing was a part of the boot scene.  I remember taking a few of the Radioman A school shipmates to my parents house for a dinner.  One of the guys asked to pass the f.. salt, my mother with complete composure asked him What Kind a salt was that.. At which he blushed and asked what he said, My mother was a wife of a sailor. nothing surprised her..  but the incident remains a fun memory of the Navy life

  • Am glad to see te term is still remembered if not used.I kinda figured you would remeber jOhnny but glad to see Thomas does too. how about hanging your wash on the mast lines and hauling them without having hem drag on the "deck". That was a two ,an job tha required team work and a ot of cussing as I recall.

  • I was there in the last half of 1960, remember the "gedunk," runs the CO provided "IF" we did something he  thought was outstanding. Seems to me that there were gedunk machines by the EX bldg that we marched to.Of course we had to stand in place at "double time," and make our purchases. All "GEDUNK," was to be consumed prior to returning to barracks. This was done while "quick timing," to barracks in formation.

I remember the "ditty bag," and as a storekeeper, they were available for purchase in the uniform section as part of clothing allowance.

Man "O" man where did time go?

  • I was served from 1986-1991 and we had "gedunk."  When I was at RTC/NTC San Diego, they still had the galley and cafeteria, but we also had McDonalds and Baskin Robbins on base.  Some days I'd eat at the cafeteria (mess deck) and other days I'd eat at the other two.  They still had "scuttlebutts" too.

  • Hey Bill Fisher:  I was beginning to think I was the only old guy on here that went through NTC in the fiftys,  April-June of 51 company 403, long time ago, went from boot to the the IOWA, and help put her back in commission, got out in 55,  take care.

  • I am sure it has, just like a lot of the other fine Naval Tradations! In our day we had the Gedunk Ribbon aka National Defense. I remember the sodas, chips, candy etc. I also remember a base had a cafateria (most likely sic) and a chow hall, now there are fast food resturants that have replaced the cafaterias (most likely sic). At the subase in Conn. the Chief's club was turned into an onbase pizza delivery place, the cafateria at Dealy Center was turned into Burger King. The Enlisted Club's resturant that once served steak, chops, spaghetti etc, etc and the Navy said our sailors are fat - go figure! And my observations on the Air Force base in Vegas with Popeyes and Burger King the Navy would have a lot of them on the weight control program! Some I have seen, I was not that big and I was on the "fat boy" program and still am since I retired before the next PRT cycle.
