  • I think the last time I was in SD, one of those "infamous theaters," is still standing. I know Horton Plaza took out some of that area but not all. I think it is the Broadway. I remember a bar (still standing) on the corner of Broadway and the hwy along the water front. Back to the theaters, yes I was obliged too take in a show or two.Never did tell MOM!

    Those were the days.

  • I remember that Theater, it was fun but cold shower after .. If you haven't been to San Diego in years, you will be surprised at the changes.  I left there 10 years ago because it was getting to crowed for me.. Now I live in a quiet little town on Maui.  But remember Boot camp and Radio A school.

  • Those places on Broadway should be gone by now.

  • It's not the paint that is burning, it's my ears! Sheesh!

If I remember correctly, the only reason for a Corpsman to be in the galley would be to inspect it's cleanliness! I told Chief Smith (cook on the Slater) that I did not belong on mess duty. So, when the smoke billowed out of the hatches he only had himself to blame. Although, I did feel 18 again having a Chief yelling at me!

We have nearly 7000 members here now and only 195 members in this command? Maybe a lot of them want to forget their boot camp experience!

I believe that if the idea got out both here and other sites about having a gathering of alumni at NTC/RTC SanDiego, there would be an onslaught of interest.

Terry, I wish I had made that trip! Even though there is so little left of the old Balboa Naval Hospital it would be a memorable moment. Even driving around it on Google street view brought back memories! That would be one way of making and RTC reunion work, combine it with a Balboa Naval Hospital reunion! Hell, a whole bunch of "old salts" could inundate the city for a weekend!

We would just have to keep some away from those night spots that were on "Broadway"! (I think that's where they were since I never patronized them myself) ;)

  • Johnny fire fighting skills are easy, if it is burning and you are not a fire fighter - run. If you see DeCota cooking a can of paint - that is an indication to make like the red sea and split! :)

  • Sorry to hear Terry, the closet I got to Nam was H&S Company 3d Med Batt. I was on the rock when the Myaguez (sic) rescue and the final Nam evacuations went down! 3d Med Nov 74 to Dec75! Semper Fi. I would have not traded that experience for anything!

  • Someone mentioned a reunion and I can vote for that.  I don't live far from San Diego but our Hospital Corps School Company had a reunion there in 2008.  Most of the 8 who showed on short notice said it was one of the best days of their life.  It was interesting that conversations were picked up in mid sentence after 40 years of not seeing each other. Even your worst friend was your best friend. The reason we had to make it a rushed reunion was I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma from exposure to Agent Orange. (Dioxin) in Viet Nam. Walked through many areas where everything was completely dead and blackened. Overhead through the canopy planes would fly through and we were never sure what they dropped.  Reunion for any Company or group is very important and a blessing to your heart. Thank you all for your service my friends.

  • Why not let DeCota cook, he can't be any worse then cooks I experienced in the Navy/Marine Corps. By the time I retired in 92 the chow hall of the past had transitioned to the dining facility! The military finally figured out that you can't feed people garbage and expect them to stay in. Boot camp had to be the worst, you had no choice, you had to eat there. I remember one morning some guy told me "just close your eyes and eat!" The next worst was 9th Engineers at Camp Hansen on Okinawa. I remember my first tour on the Truxtun, they made some sort of shrimp dish - with sauce and veggies. The problem was the shrimp were not peeled - so you burned your fingers pulling the shrimp out of the sauce to peel them. The reason the shrimp were not peeled, came from the Ensign in charge - we did not have time to peel the shrimp because we had a meeting.

As far as comshaw that happened routinely! I traded some one whatever to create me a frame for my Shellback Certificate. When the Truxtun pulled into Diego Garcia for a week or two tender availability - we had like 3 or 4 MS1's and the food flowed from that ship to the CB's First Class Living Room. They had their own bar, you had to buy a drink card for 10 bucks, beers were 50 cents a piece. They had their own barbecue area and guess where the sliders, dogs, chicken and I believe some steaks went? The livingroom area also had a theatre, movie projector and all!

  • While I was in "A" school at Millington Tn. in 1963 they locked down our dorm and  did some searching. Then they arrested one of my friends after they found stolen items in his locker. It was quite a shock. They said he ended up in Portsmouth.

  • Reunion at NTC San Diego, that would be interesting! I'm sure it will be quite a while before the numbers on the forum add up, but count me in if I'm still kicking.
