  • Pat,  I was at RTC in September of 1967 but I do remember these chit books for as long as we had them.  We had a problem and changed Company Commanders and the new CC collected all the books and paid bills 'en masse'. I was also one of the first companies (Viet Nam era) who were barracked 'across the bridge'. Never heard its real name. Being brand new there were a lot of extra duties.  There is not anything left of them I believe.  When I was there in 2008 they were the typical abandoned buildings.  Trashed, fire and burn marks along the walls, all windows broken, graffiti, parts of wall removed. These guys should have been there when we were there and they could have 'escaped' across the barbed wire fence to the East. I also never heard of us called a rifle company.  Just Company 528-07. True we did carry rifles and they were the latest 1903 model Springfield.  (Still considered a fine rifle)  It was used as a sniper rifle in VN.  Terry

  • 3439419806?profile=originalHere's a blast from the past. I just found my boot camp chit book. ( I think that we were given these when we first got to San Diego RTC to tide us over until our first huge $20 paycheck.) It still has an unused 35 cent haircut chit inside. ( Since there is no expiration date on the cover, I wonder if I could still get a cheap haircut? ) There are various nickle and dime chits still inside too. This chit book was issued in December 1970. As can be seen, I was in rifle company 467. ( EN1 Contrarus as company commander.) We were in new barracks 88 on squirrel island.

  • Company 66-745 December 66-March 67. Company commander was MMC Hancock, a former Marine drill instructor. What fun and yep, Christmas in boot! I was sent to the color guard, so missed out on mess duty week. In fact, during my whole 3.5 year career I only served one day of mess cooking, and that was out on the Silver Strand, Coronado beach while participating in Seabee war games.

  • Silly Blue is for sure... Ya I am with you Lindsey,

  • Welcome aboard Mr. Stevens. I was memmber of 091 in 1971. I arrived at NTC Feb 28. Our Company CDR was Chief Rankin. I was in the Drum and Bugle Corp. I had a great 4 yrs.

  • What a fantastic site.  Just spent the last couple hours leisurely going through various posts and comments.  Brings back so many fond memories of San Diego Boot Camp.  Member of Company 055 from back in 1971.  Served as MAA.  Retired in 2006 from NAVBASE KITSAP XO billet after 35 years (CDR/LDO).  Would gladly take the Navy ride all over again.

  • The U.S.S. Noah right?

  • I'm not saying I'm old. But the rumor is that I was a mess cook on Noah's Ark. Wish I still had my old dungaree's , heck I wish they'd still fit.

  • JL......I'm sure glad I still have my old dungarees... I don't like the New Navy Uniform Look... Reminds me of the UN Force... Ahhhhhhhh guess that's just because I like the old Navy... Well.... 1974 through 1998 anyway.. I know many out there are older then me.

    OK I'm 57

  • Jim Decota

    Thanks for the info.

I am a MS transplant from Texas.  We were a Texas company ,for the most part,

and I still have a few buddies ,my age, still living there. I will check into their

interest in the Historical Ships project.

Thanks again for the info. Sounds like it would be a fun thing, as we all

    enjoyed our service time.
