  • I was there earlier and could not find anyone around on the weekend.  The VP at corky Mcmillin have stopped answering my email, so that is a dead end.  They want nothing to do with the USS Recruit. If anyone is going to San Deigo, please make arrangements to talk to the the Naval Historical group.  The Sea Cadets, want it for training and maybe a small museum.  I suppose that would be ok, but it's condition now is poor.  Needs paint and maybe even a few chipping hammers.  Yes I remember those days.
  • Welcome Sky! Too bad we didn't know you were going to be there. We could have sent you on a mission! Check the command setup for the old TDE-1!
  • AHoy Fellow RTC San Diego Alumni,

I graduated RTC in June 1987 in company 076. I just visited the Base over the weekend and it’s bringing back a lot of great memories. Like a lot of fellow sailors here I have some mixed feelings about its current state but I’m glad that I was able to share some of its rich history with my kids. My 7 year old son LOVED marching across Nimitz bridge with me (I miss the old bridge though). At the time of my graduation I couldn't wait to leave (at 18 time is money as you all know) but I have since come to realize that the pride and confidence instilled in the recruits at RTC played a major role in who I am today and will continue to serve me very well. I’m always getting comments about how positive I am and well…that all started right there. It didn’t happen all at once but that was the start of my pursuit of something bigger then myself. I am absolutely honored to have been lucky enough to have experienced and graduated RTC/NTC San Diego and to be in the presence of follow graduates here.

  • August 1964-December 1964 Company 488
  • Special Company 944, October 1974 thru January 1975. Crack Rifle Drill Team...pretty laidback. CO. 944...the mischief we were into! Run out of toilet paper on Camp Nimitz...borrow the CC's car, take a ride to the other side, and steal all o' the Officer's Club supply ;D... Sold rolls to the neighboring companys that were out. Funded our graduation party n' sojourn up ta' Disney. 944 we were new at Nimitz. We didn't know any better. Welll, we did know, and we sure didn't care!
  • The Recruit needs some work, paint etc.  Not sure anyone is doing anything to keep it up.  Met up with some Navy guys exercising in front of it.  No help there, They were from the amphib base.  We are still feeling the effects of the flignts. Long and late. I am still in this thing.  Will be looking for people in San Diego that I used to know, to see if they can help us.

  • I am back from San Diego, Unfortunately, I made no progress and did not meet with anyone. Time was spent mostly at the Doctors office for my wife. I went by the Recruit on Saturday, but did not have time to stop, we had a lunch with the Attorney.  The McMillin office was closed (after all it was Saturday).  Wish I had more time to stop and do some asking around about things, sign etc.
  • Well, Jim W should be in SD now! But, since he is out of internet range, I guess we are in a short black out period! Should be interesting to see what happened when he gets back home Monday!
  • Welcome Terry! Glad to see you found a shipmate!

One picture we are looking for is "good" one of the 'Welcome Aboard' sign at RTC If you page back about 5 pages here, you'll see a number of the ones we have. But, we haven't been able to find a clear and decent one! One of the thoughts we have is if we discover the old sign was destroyed, we might have a replica made for the museum! However, we are going to search the 7 seas to find the original if possible.

You should load up an album with as many photos as you want. I know that I like everyone else here would enjoy seeing the place the way you saw it!

  • Just to let everyone know, We have contacted the City Council and McMillin and the Sea Cadets, this is in the effort to restore and preserve the USS Recruit TDE-1. Jim DeCota is lead on this and we all need to take part to see that it happens. Mahalo all
