I don't remember much about the Chow at RTC/NTC San Diego, but the best chow was at NavCommSta Puerto Rico, Ft. Allen. Chief Hamilton was the man in charge of the Chow Hall at Ft. Allen. He treated us like KINGS when holidays rolled around.
In early 1972, I thought the chow was pretty good, I sure don't remember
powdered eggs! But since that is close to 40 years ago(!) my memory just
might be getting a little fuzzy, and like others have pointed out, being
hungry changes one's perceptions just a bit.
I was 21, no problem for me, but I was dating some of the Mercy Nurses (Student nurses at Mercy Hospital) and TJ was the only place they could drink. We went in a group and no on really messed with us. That is not the case NOW.. I worked the border as a field Engineer in comm. I had some clown try and run me and the customs officer down.. We both jumped, only he had a weapon and shot the guy.
That is mild compared to what is going on down there now.
My brother told me that TJ is pretty much off limits to all military personnel now.
I guess with all the drug cartels and such that makes sense.
I think cooks and hn's and dental techs were restricted back then.
San Diego was so strict on the under 21 crowd getting booze, TJ was about the only choice we had to unwind.
TJ was a good place to get souveniers, although I tried to stay pure.
Used to go to the Long Bar we'd get pitchers of 2 day old beer for .75, from there to the Bum Bum Club, Chicago Club, or if you wanted to see something really gross make a stop at the Blue Fox. Sometimes on a weekend we'd make a run to Ensenada. Those were crazy times, at least thats what I've been told !
I broke out in some kind of rash working in the scullery during service week.
So they put me outside with a mop handle , sitting on top of a dumpster next to a sumpster. When guys would bring out the trash I'd say, "wet trash and point to the sumpster and dry trash for the dumpster. What a gig !
