  • Oh yea, Spam, that Hawaiian delicacy!

Balla may be in detention, but I'll bet his wife holds the baton!

  • Back on line, had to get get treated for PTSD, just making sure I am not going to kill some idiot who desparately needs it.. Shrink gets upset when I say that.  You should have been on the Annapolis, powered eggs with Onions, Bug Juice with onlons, mashed (fake) Potatoes with onions.  We had onion at every meal.  C-Rats with 1943 spam was oh so much better.  The kicker was the Onion Pie.for dinner.

As for the 100% disability, I would rather have my legs working.. but we had thought several died, but was not the case.

  • Whew, good to know your still kickin David! I had to treat a number of guys up at Balboa that brought back some souvenirs from TJ! Probably from some of those talented gals!

I wasn't thinking TJ JL! I was worried that maybe Balla went to visit AK and didn't tell David he'd be stopping by! Thought maybe David mistook him for a Moose!

David, Jim Balla disappeared from the site on 9/17! All vestiges of him are gone, lock, stock and barrel! I'm thinking the wife cut off his internet privileges!

  • Yes those powder eggs, they were still serving those powder eggs in 1974 , I got through boot camp and went home for 2 weeks before reporting to my first ship and had real eggs, I never wanted to anymore powder eggs any more. When I got to my first ship USS Meyerkord DE-1058 they served real eggs, and since I got out in Nov. of 1989 all my commands had served real eggs.
  • Must have had some brain damage from those powdered eggs, I know its spelled weight, not wait, lol!
  • Our chow was pretty good in 66. Or maybe it was because I was so damn hungry.

Shipboard chow was a different matter. Powdered eggs, bug juice, some stuff that I I'm still not sure to this day what it was. Must not have been that bad I didn't lose much wait.

I guess the Stewburners did the best they could with what they had to work with.

  • Wow, 100% disability before even graduating basic training!

Let's see, I remember breakfast so well! Runny eggs(powdered), burnt bacon(I know how to do that!), burnt toast and sour orange juice! I remember one guy in our company had to double time it back to the head almost every morning! Rich kid from Long Island if I remember right!

I also remember being guide-on bearer a number of times and almost impaling the crossing gaurd.

There was another incident in the early 70's of someone being hit on the bridge! Too bad we didn't have that nice new wide concrete bridge back then!

  • Ah the "food" served in boot, given 30 minutes to eat, then back to the grinder. We had crossing guards before that incident. I was always one, even though I was a bit vertically challenged.  Most times they would stop.  This incident was caused because the driver had a siezure.  Should never have been driving.  Retired Navy. Blew through the guards, then into the company.  I remember it all to well. Two or three were discharged because they were now paralyzed.  A few others ended up in other companies after surgeries. Hell of a thing.  Serious bad day in Boot camp.   I arrived in July of 66..

  • I went in April 74  (Co 110 ) and heard a coment or two about a car hitting recruits, That's why we had the crossing guards...
  • N

No, no GQ, JL! I think the comment was something like it was the Chief's fault for letting the Corpsman in the galley. "They always try to sterilize things"! But hey, that's how I remember it being done! Everything was either over or under cooked! That was my version of Robert's "roasting shoe polish"memory!

At least some of the Nimitz barracks are still there! Although, that shine has been replaced by soot and char!

Was everyone that was there in '66' from TX? That might explain a lot!

I am surprised that we have not heard David Asche chime in yet! It's been awfully quiet from Alaska!
