  I'm new to this forum and Jim you have been working at this for awhile so I am humbly presenting the beginnings of a frame work. By the way if you have already done any of this I apologize in advance.

  
  01) We know we want a museum. Done! That was easy.

  02) Where do we want the museum. Consensus says it's the TDE-1 but does it have to be there or can it be anywhere on the old NTC/RTC property.

  03) Are there any physical problems that would prevent the ship from being used. Example would be power, asbestos abatement, etc.

  04) Who are the stake holders in this enterprise. I can identfy us (the veterans), the property owner, and the city.

  05) Who can we make stake holders. That is, those entities with sufficient power to make things happen AND benefit from it.

  I have sent off a request to the City council of San Diego, asking for the procedure for making it a historical site.  Then a Museum.  Hey it is a start (hopefully)

  I wonder if we could get it established as a Historical Site, from there work on it becoming a Museum.  One step at a time.  I will see what I can find out about making it a historical site when I am there in a week or so, but Time being limited, It will be a hit and miss thing.

  Steve, I am betting we can find either a Senator, Congressman, Admiral or other biggy that spent boot there and also has an attachment to that "vessel"! That's the one we need!

  Jim, I don't think I would be using Duke Cunningham as a reference! LOL

  I have spoken to the Historical Dept for the City of San Diego. I am waiting for more info from them and a call from the Developer. It seems all the powers involved want nothing to do with it! There are many issues that it faces, let alone it's condition! But, if you have a big number of sailors that want to, I am sure something could be done. We are looking at a bit of time to investigate and plan! But, no time like the present...and all those sayings!

  Jim, I will be in San Diego in a week or so, only for a few days trying to settle a suit for my wife.  If there is something I can do, let me know.  I will have lots of time constraints on us because of lawyers and doctors.  But I can give it a shot. I used to know Duke Cunningham, but he is now serving time.

  Steve, read back a few postings. We may just be able to have a museum in the old TDE-1. I have been through at least a half dozen entities and I am waiting for a call back from one of the VP's of the developer on what is happening with her!

  Only the old barracks on the east side remain at Nimitz. The rest are now a parking lot. There are several buildings at NTC that have been declared historical and are still there. Because of the current economy though, the future of those buildings is in question! That is why I believe it is essential that we Navy vets do what we can to secure the future of the old TDE-1.

  MCRD has a museum. It just seems a shame to me that we can't have one also. My understanding is that Nimitz Island is largely intact. The San Diego fire department occupies some of it. Perhaps a small part of it could be set aside?
