  • That old bridge leading from Worm Island brings back some old memories. I Trekked back and forth across it starting in August 11, 1977. fours weeks of crossing and during hell week had to stand duty guarding it from possible AWOL's. Funny they shut the whole base down along with the Wave's base in Orlando, Florida. Great Lakes is the only one left as I was also there for BT-A school from Nov. 1977 to Feb. 1978.
  • I was in Company 005. Reported January 2, 1986. Is that close enough?
  • After Graduation, We were marching For Chow. It was our Last day at RTC. We asked our CC, to Dropped us on The Bridge, for Push-ups. Kinda a weird request, but he did..And during my time there we never saw a company Dropped on the Bridge, maybe that's why we Did?
  • Looking for any recruits that were in Company 001 - December 1985. CPO Reberra
  • The old worm island bridge that I crossed so many times in 72

The "new" bridge was built in 92! I wonder what the routine was during it's construction. Was the new one built along side the old one?

  • Thanks for the pics, Mr. Decota....the primary training/worm island
barracks where my company stayed in '72 are gone, bulldozed to
make room for the airport remote parking lot that's there now. The
old "R&O" barracks are still standing, part of the community college
    (I think) complex there.
  • The plans for Camp Nimitz in the future are for the entire site to become a large resort hotel and water park!

  • The barracks on the NTC side were so much more rustic and historical! I remember these so well!

  • I made a web visit via Bing maps and I know what you mean! Funny to see my old barracks on the basic side still standing and the Fire Dept using it for training? I remember marching over that bridge to the advanced side one day and having a seagull that was on one of the street lights make a deposit on my shoulder! The CC said to consider a "good luck" sign! Then he said "since I had already been dumped on, he would cut me a little slack for the rest of the day!"
Of the three boot camps you would think they would have kept San Diego with it's location and history and not Illinois? Just some more of that "sharp" decision making at the top!
  • What a strange day last Saturday was walking around what used to be NTC/RTC. Never would of thought that this great Command would end up like this. The infamous "worm island" bridge, which still stands, but not even a glimpse of what it once was. The parade grounds where graduation was held is gone and of course the place where we all experienced the Mark V gas mask is gone. I know life must go on, and I would like to end this by saying "Thank You" to NTC/RTC for starting my life out with great respect to this great nation we live in!---> GOD BLESS AMERICA
