  • I reported aboard the Super Sara in September of 1958.  The day after I came aboard she sank at the pier in Mayport.  Went to the yards in Brooklyn.  I was also aboard when she was rammed by the German freighter.  I was a Nuclear Weaponsman assigned to W-1 division.  Made two med cruises, 59-60 and 60-61. Released from active duty in March of 1961.  Great times.

  • Made the last Med cruise 1980 with VS-22 Ordnanceman  before going to drydock in Pa. Enjoyed some great times out at sea and in port.

  • I arrived onboard after the begining of the 75 med cruise and stayed until 1979. Assigned to R-Division, Door and Hatch shop. I later moved to the Pipe Shop and then the DC Storeroom. I served once more on the Sara in 1981 for 2 weeks while attached to a helo squadron, preforming angel duty for the reserve airwing. Lots of fond memories and great liberty with my shipmates.

  • I was on watch on the signal bridge when the arresting cable broke.

  • Med Cruise 1961-1962.   VA-34 Blue Blasters A4Ds.  Brownshirt.  I was almost hit when VF32  F8 hit round down and exploded. Killed the pilot.  Scared the heck out of me.  Also remember VF31 plane breaking arresting cable. Fellow in from of me lost his legs, but I can't remember who else was hurt.

    Brownshirts never sleep.

  • I served aboard the sara from 1970 to 1972 working in V-1 division.  Chalked and tied, drove a tractor and worked as an LSO talker for awhile. Great experience, however I never ever want to work that hard again.

  • I was aboard the "Sara" from 1962 to 1964, assigned to the V1 division. Made 1 Med cruise in 63.  During carrier quals in December 63, I was blown from the flight deck by the jet blast from an F8. Spent approximately 1 1/2 hours in the wqater and was rescued by the USS Macdonough.

  • Arrived on board July 65 as a Seaman and assigned to 2nd Division.  Later I was a striker in the Dental Department. I was transferred to DT "A" School in January 67.
  • I was on board Sara from 1972 to 1975 I met Sara in the Phillipean Islands and did 7 months in Westpac before returning to the states. We did an overhaul in Portsmouth VA and then did our shake down cruise in Cuba. In 1974 we headed for the Med and returned in 1975. I left Sara at Phillidelepha Naval ship yard in 1975. I was in G-Division Mag crew and Flight Deck crew. Any Red shirts out their? I remember the riots we had during our transit back to the states in 73. We had some losses in Westpac, A big fire in Singapore, another big fire while we were in the ship yards on the 03 level. and 4 more losses on the Med Criuse. Our shipmates may be gone, but they are not forgotten, They live on in our hearts and memories. Sail on boys, Sail On.  MOUSE

Med Cruise of 1963

I went aboard with VA-35 in 1963 just prior to the '63 Med cruise.  While in the Med, we had a flight spotted on the fantail for launch at night and one of the recovering planes came in and landed all amoungst them-Heck of a fire on the flight deck.  We pushed many aircraft overboard after the fire was doused.  Also, back then we had another name other than Super Sara.

Another Saratoga

Has anyone besides myself wondered why there is not another Saratoga out there in the Fleet? Just who or what needs to be done to place another "Big Sara" out there? Why not take part of the old Sara and remelt her as part of a new Sara before someone decides to make "Our Sara" a part of some new reef project?
