  • I made my 1st Med trip starting Oct 1969, join the Saratoga by means of highline from a refueling tanker. Ports France, Malta, Athens, Naples, E-3 fresh out of Damage Control School in Phili, Rate at that time was Damage Controlman (DC). Rates  changed from DC to HT about the time we when to Nam. My service time on Sara was Oct 1969 to Feb 1973.

I'm trying to find someone who was on board when Saratoga when to Norfolk from Mayport. If any of you on the Sara was on board let me know. I have a question. I left the Navy in Feb 1973 when we returned and when into the reserves. I reentered again in 1974. I had heard that the Captain was pissed that I got an early release due to the award of the Navy Marine Corp Medal that the ceremony was a waste. I wasn't there to receive it.

  • I was aboard 2/71 until 2/73, when we got back from westpac cruise. Worked in A-7 Div. ,the 02/n2 plants.

Med Cruise of 1963

I went aboard with VA-35 in 1963 just prior to the '63 Med cruise.  While in the Med, we had a flight spotted on the fantail for launch at night and one of the recovering planes came in and landed all amoungst them-Heck of a fire on the flight deck.  We pushed many aircraft overboard after the fire was doused.  Also, back then we had another name other than Super Sara.

Another Saratoga

Has anyone besides myself wondered why there is not another Saratoga out there in the Fleet? Just who or what needs to be done to place another "Big Sara" out there? Why not take part of the old Sara and remelt her as part of a new Sara before someone decides to make "Our Sara" a part of some new reef project?
