NATTC Memphis tour of duty not once, but twice.
Hello Shipmates. I attended AFUNP school and aviation electronics A school after San Diego boot camp the summer of 1970. I recall the thousands of sailors and marines there and settling into a routine of duty and school. It was odd as I didn't ask for this schooling, but somehow ended up in aviation and electronics. I soon found my niche, and I guess the Navy somehow knew my destiny. I enjoyed the challenge and the less restrictive life at NATTC. I still recall that getting off base…

I attended ADJ A school and TD A school training here and I learned a lot about jet mechanics and electronic training to become a TD. I attended the TD A school as a ADJ-2 and it was a proud moment when graduating I became a TD-2. Being a fleet sailor I didn't march in formation and was tasked with marching my group to school every day. I soon assigned one of the Waves to march the group and the other E-4 and myself followed the formation in step of course. the Wave I picked was always the same person but nobody complained .
.
Stationes @ NAS Memphis 8/1966-1/1967 as a DN @ the Dental Clinic. Traded duty stations with another WAVE whose husband was in Memphis; served the rest of my enlistment @ NAS Pensacola. Discharged in 12/1968 as a DT2. Do any of you in Memphis in 1966 remember when there was an arsonist who burned down the EM club, the PX & tried burning down the stables??
Yeah Thomas I remember Mess cooking in the Marine Galley. I was there from Mid-October 1960 through the 1st week of January 1961. I had checked in on a weekend which I learned was how they assigned new personnel to the Galleys.
I never checked in anywhere on the weekends or Fridays after that.
When I was there the galley had two Marine serving lines and one line for serving Navy ship's company personnel and I was assigned to the Navy line. Still not a lot of fun. Long work hours and short breaks. I had some buddies that worked in the scullery and I was sure glad to be on the serving line.
Went to NATTC Memphis in December of 1967 after Boot in Great Lakes. First assigned to mess cooking in the Marine Galley doing garbage can duty......Boy was that fun. Finally got to AMH "A" school and graduated in May of 67. Got orders to VS-41 at NAS North Island, San Diego...........
Spent 2 years at NATTC 1961, 62,63. Permanent personal. Went through all pre schools and then the ADJ school. Was at the ADJ school working out on the line for about a year and a half. Worked on all of the equipment. Jets, Recips and helicopters. Great place.
"A" school (AME) at NATTC Millington in late 69 after Great Lakes basic. I remember the gym and whirlpools and saunas. It was a huge old wooden structure. Not sure if there was a pool. Heard that it burned down later. Had some good memories working out there. Would enjoy seeing some old photos of the base.
