  • Please my enlistment date in the comment below. I
    enlisted on Oct. 4, 1944---NOT 1945. Sorry
  • Hi James, Glad to oblige. On Oct. 4, 1945 with Mom in tow for parental consent I marched into the Fed, Bldg and enlisted in the Combat Aircrew program. Don't laugh but my inspiration was the Buzz Sawyer comic strip. He flew the SBD Dauntless and had a Radioman / Gunner in the back seat named Sweeney. I wasn't disappointed! They let me choose from Radio School, Ordnance School and Mechanic School so I chose radio and was sent to NATTC, Memphis, Tenn.I went through Radio School, Radar School, Gunnery School and was assigned to a flight crew on a PB4Y2 Privateer. A few weeks later they dropped the bomb and it was all over! I served 1 year, 10 months and 20 days.
I loved ever single day of my short Navy career.
I still have a picture of my Boot Camp Graduation and my Flight Crew 319 if anyone would like to see it.(Yawn Yawn) ! I am still trying to find the names of all the Boot Camp Graduation guys! Chuck Nienhaus ARM 3/C
  • What a great addition James. I had one of these at one time and lost it over the years. It brings back some cool memories. I was there in '76 and '77. I went to ASE "A" school here as well as AFUN"P" School. I had all kinds of problems with the school, but I loved the base and surrounding area.
  • Fond memories of Millington. Volunteered to be a life guard instead of mess cooking and was taked over to a pool by some Marines who tried to drown us as most who had volunteered could hardly swim !!! Was a certified life guard before entering the Navy so I passed along with only two other guys. Was at the enlisted pool for a month and then got transfered to the chief's pool. What a great time.,even tried to get my school and everything switched so I could play life guard for my 4 years !!!! No good as they sent me to AFUN P school and then ADJ "A" school some time around Sept of '70. Was in 3RD Batt.,Co. 3C in the new "hotels" as they were called. As a life guard I lived in some old wooden barracks some place on there but it was cool as we didn't inspections etc. Moved to brand new barracks when I went to school , with 3 other guys in the room as I remember it. They were real tough on the room inspections since the barracks were new.A few pictures here.
  • I was at NAS Memphis starting in Oct. '71 . Boot camp then AD "A" school. Class honorman. Don't remember much about the place except it was freezing cold most of the time and marching to chow across the icy pedestrian bridge.
  • Hey guys--I was at NAS Memphis for AMS A School in the spring/summer 76

I had a friend named Drake J Haskins who I met the AFEES staion in Philly (we were the only ones who passed the exam in our group!!!)

He went on to boot in Orlando while I went to the Lakes--and we were re-aquainted at Memphis as he attended AT school

He was assigned to San Diego while I went to NAS Moffett Field Calif and stayed in touch thru that period

As usaul--we fell out of touch after my discharge in 79--until my father passed in 98

Just checking on a shipmate of mine and may God bless all military past present and future--fair winds-following seas.....
  • I was stationed at NAS Memphis in 1990-1992,worked at the BOQ
  • Was there for AV'A' school is 1969; came back for AVI'B' school in 1971. BTW, I EARNED my crow the hard way,and was not an instant crow. Two weeks before graduting from B school, I earned my second class crow too. I found out later that I would have been given auto advancement upon graduation. What I remember from NATTC is that is was HOT! Also, while going through A school, I came down with Mono. I NEVER want to be that sick again!
  • Hi everyone! My name is Valere, My dad was in the navy when I was a little girl. He attended NATTC millington in 1982 and saw a painting in building "A" that he really wants a print of, but he doesn't remember the artist or a name of the print. I would really love to get the print for him, but have not been able to find it. I was wondering if anyone of you who also attended there may remember it. This is the description he gave me: The picture is of 2 ships. USS Langley CV 1 is on the left, USS Enterprise CVN 65 is on the right. They are at sea steaming side by side. Above the Langley is a formation of biplanes. Above the Enterprise is some F14 fighters, I don't remember how many planes. The picture was supposed to symbolize the US Navy's first carrier, the Langley, and her first nuclear carrier, the Enterprise. The picture used to hang in one of the hallways at the Navy Aviation Electronics "A" school at NATTC Millington. That is in Millington,TN just North of Memphis. It was hanging there when I was there in 1982 attending AQ "A" school. It was very large about 20' by 10' Thank you in advance for your assistance!
  • I arrived at Millington January 21, 1966. Was sent to work in closed Chief's Mess before attending Aviation Machinist Mate "A" School. Graduated June 1966 and got orders to VA-172 A-4C Skyhawk Squadron.

NATTC Memphis tour of duty not once, but twice.

Hello Shipmates.  I attended AFUNP school and aviation electronics A school after San Diego boot camp the summer of 1970.  I recall the thousands of sailors and marines there and settling into a routine of duty and school.  It was odd as I didn't ask for this schooling, but somehow ended up in aviation and electronics.  I soon found my niche, and I guess the Navy somehow knew my destiny.  I enjoyed the challenge and the less restrictive life at NATTC.  I still recall that getting off base…

My time in the Navy.

Hello fellow airmen and shipmates. Went thru basic at San Diego & arrived at Memphis NATTC in late summer of 1966. I was assigned to MOC company (maint, operational, clerical). Worked in the admin building delivering in house mail all over the north and south bases.                                                    Those of us in MOC stayed in the old WW2 style barracks & ate at the Marine chow hall. While there I witnessed the old PX building burning to the ground. never had to stand…

West Memphis

OK guys..now for serious stuff.......How many will admit to an evening enjoying the honky tonks in West Memphis with the chicken fence enclosed stages and Elvis wanna bes?  Lovely evenings they were...with a required visit to a bootlegger before hoppin a cab across the river.  Seems I recall a few sidewalk stewardesses also.
