The station is best known as the location of the TOPGUN training program and the movie of the same name. In 1996 the school was relocated to Naval Air Station Fallon. During the heyday of TOPGUN the station was nicknamed "Fightertown USA".

  • I was one of the senior counselors at the Naval Drug Rehabilitation Center (NDRC) located at NAS Miramar CA from 1978 until I left the Navy September 19, 1980.
  • I was an instructor for the Aviation Physiology Training Unit, supporting Fightertown, USA and TopGun candidates. Our curriculum included instruction in the physiological aspects of flight, ejection seats, night vision and water survival. Additional duties included supporting the flight line as a member of the rescue ambulance team.
  • i was there with VF-211 when it was in hanger 1 and then in hanger 4 i sailed on the Connie, Kitty Hawk and Nimitz while withe Kitty Hawk our command mcpo was AVCM Gaylor.i also was tad at the jet shop, and did framp with VF-124. I retired out of VF-211.

I was there

I was stationed at VF126 June 78-Nov 80, Nas Miramar OpDet Nove 80-Aug 83 and VAW-110 Aug 83-Nov 85. A long time ago but fond memories. My daughter Alexis was born while I was at NAS (she was well known there) and my son Keith was born while I was stationed at VAW-110.
